Running Club

Briercrest College and Seminary has a rich athletic history that extends beyond participating in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC). Prior to joining the ACAC in 1996 Briercrest competed in the Prairie Athletic Conference (PAC), in sports such as basketball, hockey, soccer and volleyball. Briercrest Athletics has a committment to providing recreation and athletic opportunities to as many students as possible. One of these ways is through Briercrest junior varsity sport teams. These junior varsity teams provide additional competitive athletic opportunities to Briercrest students. Briercrest students participate on junior varsity teams for a variety of reasons.

Briercrest will also be establishing a junior varsity running club in fall 2016, and will be training and competing in several races during the school year.

Being a Briercrest junior varsity student-athlete involves more than just playing your sport and going to school. Briercrest Athletics wants to make sure that every athlete who comes through this program has the skills and tools necessary to exhibit the truth of God's Word through their lives in everything they do.

We want to challenge you to use the athletic gifts God has given you to fully serve him and to develop new life skills that will enable you to follow Christ throughout your life.

Briercrest Running Team

What is the Running Team?
A co-ed group of 8-10 Briercrest student athletes who train to run long distances (5km-42.2km or more!) An official Briercrest sports team that runs from September to April A team that will compete in 3-5 local races (individual and relay events)

What is the time commitment?
A Running training plan for each athlete would require 5-6 days of training per week, 1-2 hours at a time (on your own) The running team will meet once per week for group training sessions and instruction. The running team will meet once every week or two for team time and fun activities to build team spirit

What do I need to join?
Anyone can join; all training planning will be based on the athlete’s current level of fitness. Must be a Briercrest student (fall 2016-spring 2017) registered for 4 classes. Must be interested in learning to run or already enjoy running and training for running. Must make some time to follow weekly training plans. Athletic fee of $450 that covers all equipment and race costs and fee (this gets charged to your student account).

What do I get out of this?
The opportunity to be a part of a College sports team. Training plans and fitness guidance to achieve your running goals. The opportunity to compete in local races. Sports gear (full Briercrest sports clothing package). Community and friendship as you pursue your schooling at Briercrest. An opportunity to set athletic goals for yourself and achieve them

Who is the coach?
Jennifer Johnson is a kinesiologist and long distance runner. 7 years of running training and training for local races (5-21km). Many years of experience training runners at different levels of expertise. Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Certified with Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology
