Briercrest outside hitter Elly Wendel (Caronport, SK) has been named to the 2013 Saskatchewan Canada Games women’s volleyball team.
Wendel will compete at the Canada Summer Games August 3-8, 2013 in Sherbrooke, Quebec. The team consists of 12 Saskatchewan-born players aged 20 and under (born January 1, 1993 or later).
In only her first year in the ACAC, Wendel had a great impact for Briercrest this past season. She was selected to the 2012-13 ACAC women’s volleyball First Team All-Conference. She finished the season with a team high and ACAC second ranked 247 kills, team high and fifth in the ACAC 46 blocks, second on the team and ninth in the ACAC with 26 service aces, and ranked fourth on the team with 185 digs.
Wendel will have a great opportunity to continue developing her game as she competed against some of the top female volleyball players in the country from her age group.
"I am very excited for Elly to get this opportunity to compete on the national stage and train all summer with other great athletes and coaches,” Briercrest head coach Nolan Weinmaster said about the announcement. “I know this will be a great experience for her and will also be great for her development as we will look to her to be a significant part of our success this coming season again!"
"Elly is a great player and a high quality person,” Weinmaster continued. “I know she will represent our province, Briercrest, and the community of Caronport extremely well!"
The 2013 Canada Summer Games take place August 2-17, with the indoor volleyball competition scheduled for August 3-8 at the Université de Sherbrooke.
Some of the matches from the games in Sherbrooke will be televised on TSN. For more info on the Canada Games, please go to the website at: http://www.jeuxducanada2013.ca/en/node/1
