I am a planner. I love making plans, making lists, setting goals – and checking them off when completed. I do this at the beginning of my day, when I go on a trip, and even when I go to the grocery store (I don’t want to forget the broccoli!). I know the book of James cautions us to make plans in a spirit of submission to the ultimate and wise will of God, but the Scriptures are also full of verses which invite us to careful planning. One of these remarkable verses is found in Isaiah 32:8 which states: “But the noble make noble plans, and by noble deeds they stand.” This text is instructive. Nobility is something to aspire to. Noble people make plans – noble plans. However, noble people don’t just make noble plans – they DO noble things and on these initiatives they “stand”. Planning may be difficult for some and easy for others. But the real measurement of the value of planning is in the execution. On noble deeds and actions we will stand.
I am working on a lot of plans right now. I am looking at my roles (the various hats I now wear) and my goals (measurable initiatives and objectives). I hold myself accountable to these – to myself, to our board, and in many ways to all of you. I am looking forward to sharing all of these with you, and will do so soon, but in the meantime, I want to encourage you in your planning AND in your execution. The Bible warns us not to be hearers only, but to be doers also. In the same spirit – let’s not be planners only, but doers also.
I will however, share one of my plans with you now. I would like to establish regular “staff meetings” with all of you – faculty and staff. This will allow me to hear from you and you will be able to hear from me. Communication is vital to maintaining alignment, ensuring understanding, and sustaining forward motion as an organization. I have so much to learn from all of you and I need a forum to listen. So, to this end, I would like to recommend that we establish a regular time to meet each week. In speaking with the cabinet and with Heidi, I would like to suggest we meet on a Thursday morning for 60 minutes (8:30-9:30am – location to be determined). At these meetings I would like to cast a vision nugget, offer any institutional updates, solicit some dialogue, and enjoy some prayer together.
Here are some dates to flag in your calendars: June 27, July 4, 11, August 8, 20 (at 11:00 am, followed by our Employee Welcome Event), 29, September 5, 12, 19, and 26. In October we can discuss the frequency of our meetings, but I am anxious to get to know all of you, and I think it is significant that we spend time together discussing our noble plans and sharing our noble actions.
See you soon…June 19 is our moving day. Have a good Tuesday!
