Scholarships and Bursaries(old)

At Briercrest College and Seminary, we strive to ensure that our education is affordable and accessible for all students. Each year, we award thousands of dollars in scholarships and bursaries to new and returning students based on merit and financial need. Award amounts vary.

How to Apply

To apply for a scholarship and/or bursary, please contact an admissions adviser at 1-800-667-5199. Once you've received your username and password to apply, you can access the form through Briercrest Live. Current students can use their Briercrest Live username and password to be able to access the application form.

2012-2013 Opening Dates

Returning students: January 17, 2012

New students: February 1, 2012

2012/2013 Application Deadlines

Returning Students: February 25, 2012 and May 15, 2012. The largest disbursal will occur in the February 25, 2012 deadline. If you do not receive a scholarship in the first disbursement, your application will be retained and reviewed for future disbursals.

New Students: March 31, 2012 and May 15, 2012. The largest disbursal will occur in the March 31, 2012 deadline. If you do not receive a scholarship in the first disbursement, your application will be retained and reviewed for future disbursals.

Award Notification Dates

Returning Students: March 31, 2012, June 15, 2012

New Students: May 8, 2012, June 15, 2012

Only students who receive an award will be notified.

Definitions

Scholarship Definition -- merit based award. The recipient must meet specific criteria to qualify.

Bursary Definition -- financial need based award. The recipient must demonstrate financial need.

GPA -- Grade Point Average

Tips for Success

  • Read the criteria carefully
  • Only apply for awards you qualify for
  • Write clearly and concisely, address the requirements of the award
  • Have someone edit and critique your writing
  • Choose references well (not family members)
  • References should be someone who knows you well and will respond to requests for information promptly
  • Ask for permission of references before submitting their name
  • Ensure correct reference contact information

General Criteria (unless otherwise noted)

Each student who would like to be considered for a scholarship from Briercrest College and Seminary must submit a completed application form by the stated deadlines and declare all information to be accurate to the best of his or her knowledge.

Eligibility

  • Official acceptance to Briercrest College (pending final official transcript review), meeting Briercrest College and Seminary Admissions requirements.
  • Students applying for all scholarships are required to complete the application by the stated deadline each year.
  • Students are required to study on-campus (Distance Learning, Kaléo and study abroad do not qualify).
  • Students are required to live in dorm.*
  • Students are required to have a cumulative GPA of 2.3 or higher.*
  • Students are required to maintain a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester in the year the scholarship is awarded to maintain eligibility. Enrolment in less than 12 credit hours per semester will result in termination of the award.*
  • Students must maintain good standing in all areas in the year awarded.
  • Student must meet criteria of the specific scholarship or bursary.

*With the exception of certain scholarships. Exceptions are noted in those particular awards criteria.

Award amounts vary. Not all scholarships/bursaries are awarded every year.

Managing God's Money Bursaries

Managing God's Money Bursaries - students who exhibit financial need who "thirst" after the Lord; students who know God has called them to be at Briercrest and want to benefit from the Briercrest "Oasis."

  • Incoming student -- 1 bursary (tuition, fees, room, board and books) non-renewable
  • Returning student --1 $3500 - $5000 bursary, non-renewable


Presidents Scholarship (multiple awards)

The President's Scholarship is intended for students who exemplify a capacity to embrace the mission of Briercrest College and Seminary and strive for academic excellence. The President's Scholarship is renewable for four years if the student maintains his or her eligibility. The amount is fixed at $3500/year with $1750 disbursed in September and $1750 disbursed in January of each academic year.

Applications open to new incoming and new transfer students.

Eligibility

  • Official acceptance to Briercrest College (pending final official transcript review). meeting Briercrest College and Seminary Admissions requirements.
  • Students applying for all scholarships must complete the application by the stated deadline each year.
  • Students must be studying on-campus (Distance Learning, Kaléo and study abroad do not qualify).
  • Students applying for the President's Scholarship must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and maintain a GPA of 3.0 each semester.
  • Students must maintain a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester in the year the scholarship is awarded to maintain eligibility. Enrolment in less than 12 credit hours per semester will result in termination of the award.
  • Students are required to live in dorm.
  • Students must be involved in significant co-curricular activities each semester. Significant co-curricular activity may include involvement with athletic teams, worship teams, Youth Quake, our annual Christmas musical production, student leadership, or another activity approved by the Student Finance office.
  • Students must maintain good standing in all areas in the year the award.

Dean's Scholarship (multiple awards)

Dean's Scholarships are intended for students who exhibit an aptitude for a given degree program and strive for academic excellence. The Dean's Scholarships are renewable for four years as long as the student maintains his or her eligibility. The amount is fixed at $2500/year with $1250 disbursed in September and $1250 disbursed in January of each academic year.

Applications open to new incoming and new transfer students.

Eligibility

  • Official acceptance to Briercrest College (pending final official transcript review), meeting Briercrest College and Seminary Admissions requirements.
  • Students applying for all scholarships must complete the application by the stated deadline each year.
  • Students must be studying on-campus (Distance Learning, Kaléo and study abroad do not qualify).
  • Students applying for the Dean's Scholarship must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and maintain a GPA of 3.5 each semester.
  • Students must be registered for at least 15 credit hours each semester.
  • Students are required to live in dorm.
  • Students must maintain good standing in all areas.

Athletics Scholarships (non-renewable)

These are awarded through the Athletics Recruitment office and the Student Finance office. Scholarships are disbursed in January and May after all grades have been posted.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 2.0 term GPA per semester in year one or first year of transfer.
  • 2.3 term GPA per semester in all successive seasons.
  • Students are expected to carry 12 college credit hours per semester or 9 seminary credit hours per semester.
  • Students must maintain good standing in all areas.

Intended for students who exibit aptitude for and interest in the performing arts. Students must be enrolled in an AA or BA in the Worship Arts Department at Briercrest College.

David and Jeannie Hildebrand Memorial Scholarship for Music

For a Music/Worship Arts program student.

Sperling Memorial Music Scholarship

For a college or Caronport High School student pursuing a music program at BCS.

W.A. Gobbett Scholarship in Canadian history

For a returning student who excelled in Canadian History in the previous year.

Boehr Construction Scholarship

For a new or returning college student who has worked in a trade before attending Briercrest or who intends to work in a trade after leaving Briercrest or who has done volunteer mission work using a trade.    

D.J. Moore Foundation Scholarship

For a fourth- or fifth-year graduating student who has had overseas summer missionary experience and who intends to pursue full-time missionary service. Preference given to students who served with Missions Outreach Inc.

Doris Batey Memorial Scholarship

For a student who intends to go into full-time Christian service.

Dr. H. Allan Smyth Memorial Scholarship

For a excelling senior student involved in music or youth ministry intending on full-time ministry.

Eric G. Nash Memorial Scholarship*

For a senior student enrolled in a Global Studies program who has began negotiations with a mission organization, preference given to a student from southern Ontario

Frederick and Marjorie Jones Scholarship

For a student entering full-time ministry.

G.A. Dan Murray Memorial Scholarship

For a second year student majoring in Global Studies who "exercises" the faith in meaningful life contacts. Should be a resident of the Calgary area with preference to those who have attended Foothills Alliance Church, Parkdale Missionary Church, or Miburn Alliance Tabernacle.

Graham and James Enns Scholarship*

For a third year student in a Global Studies or Christian Ministry program; planning a career in full-time Christian ministry.

Hildi Sawatzky Bursary

For a student displaying financial need, preference given to a student in a Global Studies program.

John M. Rogers, Sr. Memorial Scholarship*

For a college student pursuing a goal in ministry to street kids or working towards a career in addiction research or counseling.

Ken and Anne Appleby Bursary*

For a student in financial need intending full-time pastoral ministry.

Fern Easom Memorial Scholarship*

For a returning missionary furthering education or to a son or daughter of a missionary family who is preparing for service on the mission field.

Kirkland and Mossy Fletcher Memorial Scholarship

For a student planning a full-time ministry at home or abroad.

Myrtle Peavoy Memorial Scholarships

For a second- or third-year student intending on entering pastoral ministry.

Paul Weston Memorial Scholarship*

For a male senior student intending on entering full-time ministry.

Rodney Draxinger Memorial Scholarship*

For a student interested in music or planning to go into the ministry; to a student interested in giving leadership in the student body or a Christian Ministry program student .

Reed Family Scholarship

For a Global Studies or Applied Linguistics student who is committed to serving as a missionary at home or abroad. Must exhibit financial need.

Vera M. Nash Memorial Scholarship*

For a student in 4th year of a missions major and who has begun serious negotiations with an accredited missionary organization toward full-time missionary service or to one who has spent time in missionary service.

Violet I. McNabb Music Bursary*

For a student intending on music ministry after graduation.

William and Lena Magnus Bursary

For a senior student with financial need, preference given to a student pursuing pastoral ministry.

Caronport High School Alumni Scholarships and Bursaries

David Wiens Memorial Scholarship

Preference given to students who have graduated from CHS.

Mark Lemke Memorial Scholarship

To a graduating male CHS student attending Briercrest College the following academic year.  Preference given to a Cougar Football player who is a team leader by example, exibits good sport qualities and has a willingness to be involved elsewhere. Their desire to grow in Christ should be evidenced on and off the field. 

Oscar and Genevieve Eliason Memorial Bursary

To a grade twelve CHS student returning to Briercrest College who has a high academic standing, exemplifies a Christ-like attitude in daily living and who demonstrates a financial need.

Reginald and Ethel Argue Memorial Scholarship

To a graduating CHS student of a fulltime staff member of Briercrest College and Seminary enrolling in Briercrest College immediately following graduation who has shown academic achievement, involvement in extra-curricular activities and strong Christian character. Must exibit financial need.

William Clubb Memorial Fund

To a graduating CHS student with preference given to applicant with highest GPA.

For one who demonstrated unusual courage, dedication, diligence in confronting personal disadvantage, challenge, trials and/or hardships.

Rev. Odd and Joy Brygmann Memorial Scholarship

For a student who exhibits dependability, enthusiasm, loyalty, and a willingness to work, always endeavoring to do his/her best and give their all in every situation.

Schnare-Oikle Scholarship

For a family where serious health complications of a newborn infant require additional personal expenditures for travel, medical, and/or funeral within the first 0 -- 12 months of life or a student who demonstrates servant and leadership qualities (with preference to those from the Atlantic provinces).

90-10 Bursary

For a student in financial need who is working part-time while in college school.

Dallas Lutzer Memorial Scholarship

For a student working at camp, preference given to a student at Dallas Valley Ranch Camp.

Folklore Bursary

For a student who worked with Folklore the previous summer in financial need.

For a young married couple.

For a freshmen student, preference given to a student whose parents are in full-time ministry.

For a direct descendant of Pete and Anne Peters.

For children of missionary parents.

For student(s) with financial need, preference given to students from southern Ontario.

For a worthy first-year student, preference given to residents of the LaFleche-Woodrow area.

For a student from Ottawa or southern Ontario.

Married Student Discount

Spouses of full-time students are eligible for a discount in the tuition costs per semester. To apply for the discount, complete and submit the Married Student Discount Application Form.
