Biography

I was raised in a Christian home in Fort Worth, Texas, and I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord at the age of eight. I majored in Bible at Hardin-Simmons University, a small Baptist School in west Texas. It was there that I surrendered my life to full-time vocational service. After returning to Fort Worth for seminary I married Myra. While I finished my Ph.D., I was the pastor of a small congregation inArkansas. Afterwards, Myra and I became missionaries teaching at the Philippine Baptist Theological Seminary. During this time our son, John, was born.

When our mission agency began to change its philosophy, God led us to Briercrest. Although my approach to teaching theology includes some memorization, some reading, and some writing, I believe that studying theology is not just about memorizing pat answers to difficult questions. Since theology serves the ministry and mission of the church, Christians must learn to express God's truth in ways that are relevant to each contemporary situation. Studying theology helps Christians communicate the unchanging truth of God's love for the world so that the light of the gospel will be visible to those who live in darkness. In addition, the study of theology helps Christians to understand how to live and think in obedience to God amid the confusing circumstances of this world.
