God IS Great, and God IS Good

Posted: August 11, 2014

I was not raised in a home that expressed authentic faith, however, my parents took me to a small country church Sunday School on occasion and I was taught a very simple prayer:

God is Great. God is Good. Let us thank Him for our food. Amen

These words – like so many prayers, unfortunately quickly became hollow and lifeless. However, this little prayer is rich and far reaching in its worship and declaration. God is Great. God is the Almighty. God is all-knowing. God is all-wise. God is ever-present. God is all-powerful. God is the sum total of all perfections. God is completely transcendent. God is Omni-everything and we are Omni-nothing. Yes, God is Great!

And, God is Good. God is kind. God is righteous. God is benevolent. God cares – about you and about me. And, God can act. He has the power to show his goodness. Read these words of Scripture slowly.

I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless you
and praise your name forever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
    and his greatness is unsearchable.

One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
The Lord is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made
(Psalm 145:1-9).

This morning – let your heart, soul, and mind be strengthened and encouraged with the truth that God IS Great, and God IS Good. And let's be thankful.

Partnering together,
Michael
