Scott Lesher heads into second season as team captain

Scott Lesher's first two seasons in the ACAC have been nothing short of amazing.

Lesher, who is in his third season with the Clipper Men’s volleyball team, is starting his second season as team captain.

The 6’ 2” left side hitter from Lacombe, Alta., is coming off of a great year, where he was named an ACAC all-conference player and led his team to a silver medal at the ACAC conference championships.

He was also named the MVP for his team and honoured as the male athlete of the year for Briercrest Athletics.

The year before, during his rookie season, Scott was named male rookie of the year for Briercrest after helping his team to qualify for the ACAC conference tournament.

Before coming to Briercrest, Lesher played high school volleyball for Central Alberta Christian High School, where he was also a standout player: he was the MVP of his team in both Grade 11 and Grade 12.

Scott is also an excellent beach volleyball player. He was chosen for Team Alberta during his 16U year. He won Alberta beach provincials in his Grade 12 year and was rewarded with a trip to Canadian beach nationals.

Lesher also had the opportunity to represent his province on the indoor court, playing for Team Alberta in his 17U season.

An awesome experience
“Briercrest for me has been an awesome experience because of a couple of things,” Lesher said. “The relationships that I’ve made through athletics are some of the strongest relationships I’ve ever had. Along with that is the high caliber volleyball that I have been able to be a part of.”

It was originally his sister’s (Candice, a Briercrest women’s volleyball alum) influence that helped him to decide that Briercrest was the school for him.

“I knew it was a great school from all I had heard from her and I definitely wanted to play volleyball at a college level,” he said.

Along with his desire to play volleyball, Scott wanted to study business. He is working on his BA in Business Administration at Briercrest.

Scott sees his biggest strength as player to be his ability to be smart on offence and an effective attacker.

Coach Nigel Mullan agrees: “Scott has the ability to give our team confidence through his ability and drive to succeed.  His athletic ability is inspiring to those who play with him.”

Chosen for his character
Mullan also said that he chose Scott as captain because of his quality character.

“Scott is a young man of character and integrity," Mullan said.  "He desires to see good things happen both for the individuals on the team and for the team in general.  He is a person that will make the unpopular decision when needed, to stand alone and set the example.”

When he's not on the volleyball court, Scott also enjoys playing hockey, snowboarding, and playing video games. Some of his most memorable experiences have been going skydiving, playing on TSN for Team Saskatchewan Volleyball at the 2009 Canada Summer Games, and proposing to his fiancé, Aryn Currie, last spring.

With his future sights set on getting married and finishing his Business degree, Lesher has only one thing on his mind right now: winning a championship.

“I have set a high expectation on myself as well as our team this year as we have the skills to beat any team we will face," he said. "Our goal is to host provincials and to win nationals, which is not out of our reach. We have more talent on this team than any other team I have been a part of.”
