Men's hockey to host Portage College

Posted: November 8, 2010

It will be a quieter weekend for your Briercrest Clipper teams in terms of regular season action this weekend.

Four out of five teams have regular season byes, but not hockey: they play at home.

Your men's and women's basketball teams will also be competing in two exhibition tilts each as they travel to North Dakota.

Hockey
Your Briercrest hockey team will host Portage College for a pair of games at the Barkman Arena this weekend. The guys are coming off a split weekend against the MacEwan University Griffins, where they won 5-4 on Friday night, but lost on Saturday.

Portage currently sits in fifth place in the ACAC and two points ahead of the Clippers. The Clippers can leapfrog them in the standings with a pair of wins this weekend.

Game times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and then 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. This is the only ACAC action in town this weekend, so come out and cheer on your Clippers at the Barkman Arena! If you're out of town, both games will be shown live on www.sportscanada.tv.

Basketball
Men’s basketball is on the road to North Dakota to play Valley City State University for a pair of exhibition games. They will play at 8 p.m. on Friday and then at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The guys are flying high right now after a huge regular season weekend where they beat Keyano College on Friday night and then followed that up with a big win over MacEwan University on Saturday night. They hope to keep that momentum going in their exhibition matchups this weekend.

The women also had a huge victory on Friday night, knocking off Keyano 63-47. Janelle Threlfell, a rookie, scored 33 points in the victory.

Unfortunately, Saturday night did not go as well against MacEwan University. The Clippers fell to the Griffins and lost Threlfell to a knee injury in the process.

The ladies are also headed to North Dakota this weekend, where they will take on the University of Mary in Bismarck and then travel up to Minot, where they will play Minot State University.

This will be a pair of very high-calibre exhibition games for the Clippers. Game times are 3 p.m. on Saturday at U Mary, and then 4 p.m. on Sunday at MSU.

Volleyball
Both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams will be enjoying a weekend off with their first bye of the regular season.

The men continued to roll this past weekend with two straight-set victories over the Concordia Thunder in Edmonton. The Clippers continue to lead the way in the ACAC as the only undefeated team in the league.

The women got their first regular season win of the year on Saturday as the put forth a dominating performance, winning the match 3-0 over Concordia.

The night before was, unfortunately, another fifth-set heartbreaker: the ladies lost in the fifth set for the third time in five matches. They are hoping the great performance they had on Saturday will reset the course for the rest of the season ahead.

Both teams are excited for a bye weekend to get some rest and an extra week of practice to prepare for hosting the MacEwan University Griffins November 19 and 20 in what will be  huge match-ups for both teams.
