Briercrest volleyball to host Grant MacEwan University

Posted: November 16, 2010

This will be a busy weekend for your Briercrest Clippers. All five teams are back into their regular season schedules. Hockey and basketball are on the road, and the volleyball teams are at home.

Volleyball
The men’s and women’s volleyball teams will host the Grant MacEwan University Griffins in the Margaret P. Reimer Gymnasium this weekend. Match times will be at 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men) Friday, with rematches at 1 p.m.  (women) and 3 p.m. (men) Saturday.

The women hope last weekend’s victory will start a winning streak that leads to a playoff spot as they take on the Griffins this weekend.

MacEwan, currently on a two-game winning streak, sits in fourth place in the ACAC with a record of 5-3.

The undefeated Briercrest men’s volleyball team sits alone in top spot in the ACAC and the entire CCAA, as the number-one team in the country. They’re looking to continue their winning ways against a solid opponent from MacEwan, who is currently sixth out of 14 teams in the ACAC with a record of 4-4.

This will be the only ACAC action in town this weekend, so come out and cheer on your Clipper volleyball teams as the guys strive to keep their number-one ranking intact and the women look for their second win in a row!

Basketball
The Briercrest basketball teams are on the road up north this weekend. They’ll take on the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves Friday before heading to Edmonton Saturday to play NAIT.

The women’s basketball team will look for their second win of the season this weekend as they face a pair of solid opponents: Grande Prairie is currently holding second place in the ACAC North Division with a record of five wins and one loss, raking them number 11 in the country. The NAIT Ooks are in fifth place out of eight teams in the north with a 2-4 record.

The Briercrest men’s basketball team is tied for third in the ACAC South Division with a record of 3-3. After handing the number-one team in the north, MacEwan, their only loss of the season so far, the guys will look to keep their undefeated streak against north opponents going.
The guys also defeated Keyano College, the only other North Division opponent they have faced this year.

This weekend is a great opportunity for the Clippers to move up in the standings: Grande Prairie (2-4) sits in sixth place in the north while NAIT (4-2) is third. The Ooks are ranked at number seven in the CCAA.

Game times will be 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men) both Friday and Saturday. Friday's games will be broadcast live on-line at www.gprc.ab.ca/athletics/streamcast , while Saturday evening's games will be on www.sportscanada.tv .

Hockey
The Briercrest hockey team is on the road to Camrose, Alta., this weekend, where they’ll face the Augustana Vikings.

The Clippers are coming off a 1-1 weekend against the Portage College Voyagers. Briercrest lost 5-3 Friday night, but bounced back with a great team performance Saturday to earn a 4-1 victory. The Clippers remain in seventh place after the weekend with eight points.

Augustana, meanwhile, is also coming off a split weekend with the Mount Royal University Cougars. The Vikings are in third place in the league and six points ahead of the Clippers with 14 points. This weekend is a great opportunity for Briercrest to make up some ground in the playoff race and potentially pull ahead of Portage, who has another tough weekend ahead against NAIT.

Game times for the Clippers are 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.
