Briercrest women lose home opener to Lakeland

October 26 brought a good crowd out to the Briercrest College women's home opener against the Lakeland College Rustlers. Briercrest started strong with a bank shot from Meghan Carr in the first 30 seconds of play, and Carr continued to play well hitting two shots consecutively. The first quarter finished with a score of 12-17 in favour of the Rustlers.
Meghan Meyer had a strong second quarter hitting a three-pointer followed by an outside shot shortly after. Co-captain Claire Richardson hit a quick bank shot with less than two seconds left in the half leaving the Rustlers with a 31-21 lead heading into the locker room.
Lakeland continued to play well in the third quarter outscoring the Briercrest Clippers 19-8. Returning point guard and first-year captain Brittany Larson continued to play strong scoring four points in the third quarter, accompanied by two points from Karly Goertzen as well as two from Tracy Frimpong.
Lakeland finished the game winning 59-33. Briercrest had fourth quarter points from Meghan Carr and Laura Wild.
Great gameplay by Rustlers' forward Amanda Carlton, scoring nineteen points and nine rebounds, gave her player of the game honours. Briercrest player of the game was Meghan Carr with ten points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Tomorrow night at 6:00 pm is the second home season game for Briercrest taking on the University of Alberta, Augustana Vikings.
