Briercrest women’s basketball began their first ACAC road trip of the season with a loss to Grande Prairie Regional College 63–50.

Briercrest fell behind by three points each quarter of the first half by identical scores of 15-12, to find themselves down 30-24 at the half. They had a sluggish fourth quarter defensively and were down 51-36, before their attempted comeback in the fourth quarter fell short. Briercrest won the rebound battle with 54 compared to GPRC’s 48, but shot 28.6% on the night compared to GPRC’s 36%.

Notable numbers: Team co-captain led Briercrest in minutes played with 40:00, as well as 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal. Meghan Carr led the team with 12 rebounds (7 offensive), to go along with her 2 assists, 2 blocks and team leading 12 points. Co-captain Claire Richardson also had a team leading 12 points to go along with 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block and 2 steals.

 

Saturday, Nov. 3

Briercrest came up against a strong team, in the King’s University College, Saturday night and fell behind early and were unable to recover. Briercrest was down 17-8 after the first quarter, and 38-23 at half-time, losing the game 72-40.

Head coach Chad Romanuk was able to find some positives in the loss.

“We had 23 turnovers tonight, but we brought that down from last night, and against a better team. King’s are ranked third in ACAC, so good to bring that down against them.”

Briercrest also improved from the free throw line hitting 66.7% compared to 36.4% on Friday night, but only got to the line 12 times compared to 23 for King’s.

Notable numbers: Minutes were more evenly distributed on Saturday with eleven players seeing some playing time, and eight in double digits of playing time. Claire Richardson led Briercrest with a team leading 12 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with 2 assists, and 2 steals. Brittany Larson once again led Briercrest in playing time, as well as assists with 4, to go along with 4 rebounds and 2 points. Meghan Carr had another strong game offensively with 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Rookie Hannah Klassen made an impact in over 22 minutes of playing time, and collected 7 points and 1 rebound.

 

Briercrest has their second longest road trip of the season Nov 9-10, traveling to Fort McMurray to face Keyano College on Friday, and then Concordia University College on Saturday.
