downhere and High Valley to perform special YQ concert

The contemporary Christian band downhere is coming back to the place it started to celebrate Youth Quake’s 50th anniversary.

Briercrest is celebrating YQ’s 50th with a double concert beginning at 1:30 pm on February 16, featuring downhere along with the country group High Valley. Special tickets for the afternoon concert have been made available to the general public.

“We have tickets for sale that are a combination ticket,” Youth Quake director, AJ Crocker said. “One $30 ticket gets you into both concerts.”

Only 100 special $50 tickets are being sold that will include a meet and greet with downhere.

Crocker says there are a few reasons they opened up the YQ concert to everyone.

“Mostly because downhere is popular among alumni,” he said. “Because it’s YQ’s 50th anniversary and because of High Valley’s unique draw in this local area. We thought this was a good combo to plug together.”

The concert with downhere is coming at a key time. In July the members of the band announced that January 1, 2013 would mark the end of their traveling ministry.

“We’re having them back to have a Briercrest goodbye,” Crocker said. “It’s not their last show ever, but this will be a way to say goodbye to probably the most popular Briercrest alumni in a couple of decades.”

The group has deep roots in Briercrest.

“They formed as a band here and recorded their first album here,” Crocker explained. “Their career launched here from doing chapels and doing YQ and things like that. When they went to Nashville and pursued it hard, after one of their first albums came out, they came back and played Friday night of YQ 2002.”

The YQ director says this is also a prime time to book a High Valley concert.

“They were on a slow rise and this last album shot them through the roof,” he said. “With three big singles off this album across the country on Canadian charts, they’re riding pretty high at this point which is a great time for us to have them.  A lot of our students can’t believe we were able to get them.”

Tickets for the concert can be purchased by calling Briercrest at 1-888-462-2202. More information about the concert and YQ can be found at briercrest.ca/YQ.
