The Briercrest men’s hockey team played game two against the Concordia University College Thunder. This game was played with intensity and both teams came out hungry for the win. At the end of 60 minutes Concordia took the game by the score of 7-0.

Briercrest men’s hockey is still looking for their first win of the season. They fought hard this past weekend but came up short. In the second game there were stretches of time where they had opportunities to score but just could not find the back of the net.

In the first 20 Briercrest came out flying as they were willing to sacrifice the body blocking shots and throwing their weight around. Concordia scored the only goal as the puck was in the air of the initial shot and then was batted into the net behind starting goalie Jesse Chenard. The Thunder had to kill a penalty in the frame as they took a minor penalty for interference. At the final buzzer of the period Briercrest’s Jordaan Braun and Concordia’s Devon Tordoff took offsetting roughing penalties, as there was a scrum in front of Chenard.

The middle frame saw some more hard hitting as Josh McGuire of Briercrest was stapled into the end boards from behind resulting in a two minute minor and a misconduct penalty. The Thunder added three goals in the period to extend their lead to 4-0, but Chenard was able to flash the leather on one play that got the Briercrest bench going. Briercrest had opportunities to score but just could not get the puck to cross the goal line.

The final stanza was just as tough as the first two as both teams threw the body and crashed the net hard. Briercrest changed goalies in the frame as Concordia potted two goals on Chenard and put one behind Christian Mueller.  Mueller was able to make some great saves after coming off the bench as he was solid between the pipes. Briercrest took two penalties late in the period but were able to kill them off.

The players that received the player of the game awards were, Josh Dufernse of Briercrest as he contributed a lot of hard work and threw the body and Matt York of Concordia.

The hometown fans will have a chance to cheer on their team, as they will be at Barkman Arena for two games as they are hosting Augustana. Friday the puck will drop at 7:30 pm and Saturday the game will start at 2:00 pm.
