The red-hot Grant MacEwan Griffins, winners of seven of eight games this season, proved to be too much of a challenge for the injury-depleted Briercrest Clippers, defeating the home side by a score of 70-38.

An issue in Friday night’s game, Briercrest got off to another slow start, allowing the Griffins 41 points in the first half. Grant MacEwan played tight on defence, with forward Kelly Fagan amassing four blocks in the first half, adding another two in the second. The second half had a similar storyline for the Clippers, as they struggled to get their offence going. The visitor’s size also was a factor, preventing Briercrest from penetrating the key and making rebounding difficult, particularly on defence. Rookie Hannah Klassen had a strong game off the bench, sinking back-to-back threes in the fourth quarter. Klassen’s willingness to drive the ball down low proved to be an asset to the team, who struggled to confidently carry the ball. Captain Brittany Larson provided speed and energy for Briercrest, highlighting her leadership abilities on the young squad. Injuries continue to be a challenge for the Clippers, playing without starter Meghan Carr and rookie Laura Wild.

Players of the game were Claire Richardson for Briercrest, who was a force to be reckoned with underneath the basket, collecting a game high 11 rebounds, a team high three assists, two steals and one block, and two points; for the Griffins, Kelly Fagan got the nod, with eight points, eight rebounds, one assist, two steals and six blocks.

Game notes: Briercrest was outshot 67-56, shooting 25% from the field, compared to 34.3% from the visitors. Both teams were solid from the line, shooting 88% and 91%, respectively. Getting to the free-throw line continues to be a factor for Briercrest as they went the charity stripes only eight times compared to 23. The Clippers were out-blocked seven to three and out-rebounded 46-33. Team leaders for Briercrest were Tracy Frimpong with 12 points and 15 shots, and the aforementionedRichardson with 11 rebounds and three assists.

Briercrest has a bye weekend next week, with play resuming Nov 30 at Lethbridge College.
