In only his second year playing for Briercrest Steven Guenther is having an impact on the scoresheet each and every night.

The BA Business Administration student is currently ranked sixth in the ACAC in digs, 12th in kills and 16th in service aces. Only half way into the 2012-13 season , Guenther has already far exceeded his first year totals in almost every statistical category.

Head coach Nigel Mullan has been impressed by the athletic attributes that Guenther brings to the team.

“Steve is a very physical player with all types of skills to be effective for us,” Mullan said. “He has a heavy arm and what makes him even more dangerous is that he has the ability to play the game with touch as well.  It definitely keeps his opponents guessing what is coming from him.”

The 6’ 3” alumnus of Springfield Collegiate brings a history of success to a strong Briercrest team.

“My greatest moment so far athletically would be winning bronze at the 17U volleyball nationals,” Guenther said.

Guenther has simple yet strong goals for this season as both a student and as an athlete, “maintain a high GPA and strive to serve my team with my best.”

“My biggest strength as a person is putting my priority in people,” Guenther said. “I use relational leadership.”

Coach Mullan has been impressed by what he has observed in Guenther beyond what he simply brings to the volleyball court.

“Steve adds significant contributions to both the team and the school,” Mullan said. “He has the presence about him that when he speaks he speaks in a way that carries weight and makes people take notice.  He is mature beyond his years and is a player that we are proud to have in our jersey.”

Guenther’s path to Briercrest had several influences.

“What brought me to Briercrest was the volleyball program and a friend’s recommendation. What’s special about the volleyball team here at Briercrest is the deep relationships that go way past volleyball.”

The native of Oak Bank, Manitoba’s favourite moment at Briercrest was an experience that he was able to share with his teammates.

“My favourite moment at Briercrest so far was hosting ACAC provincials in 2011-2012 in Moose Jaw.”

When asked for a way that he could change the world for the better the leftside had a simple answer.

“I can treat others the way I would like to be treated,” Guenther said. “The Bible verse that has most impacted my life is Romans 5:8, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Hope not in our own righteousness but instead in the grace of God.”
