The 2014 national volleyball championships are coming to Saskatchewan.

The Canadian Colleges Athletic Association men’s volleyball national championship will be in Moose Jaw  March 2014. Briercrest College and Seminary will be the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association’s host team. Final approval is subject to the CCAA approving the winning ACAC bid at its meeting in January.

Athletic Director Nigel Mullan was ecstatic when the results of the vote were announced.

“It was great news,” he said. “We are excited to win the opportunity of hosting this great event. It gives us the chance to showcase our school, the ACAC, Saskatchewan and the city of Moose Jaw. ”

The Briercrest men’s volleyball team has competed at nationals several times, and the school was host to a national basketball championship in the 90’s but this will be the first time the school hosts a CCAA volleyball championship. Briercrest is the only Saskatchewan college competing at the CCAA level.

The excitement wasn’t limited to Mullan, however, as the news was well received throughout the entire institution.

“This event is going to be a great opportunity for our school,” President Dwayne Uglem said. “Our teams compete in the strong ACAC league with the goal of representing both the league and our school at national championships. This guarantees us that opportunity.”

The president added that the event is also a great win for Moose Jaw and the businesses in the city.

“This is a great day for our school and for Moose Jaw as all the games will be held in the city.”

It is an eight team tournament with six teams representing college leagues from BC, Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes will join the ACAC champion and the host team.

“Our goal is to enter this tournament as the ACAC champions,” Mullan said. “We strive for excellence in our program and one of our goals next year will be to win our league championship.
