Briercrest 90 - SAIT 77

“After a challenging start with a field goal percentage of 42 and 17 turnovers we ended the first half with a last second half court shot by Matt Myers to bring us within four points.  The second half tone was set by Player of the Game James Wohlgeschaffen who made some of the most athletic “Superhero” plays in the history of Clipper Basketball and finished the game with 15 points, 10 rebounds (5 offensive), and four steals.  Along with pressure from Caleb Klassen (11 points, three rebounds, six assists and three steals) and Kendell Boese (11 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals) we were able to turn the game around forcing SAIT to turn the ball over 28 times to our 27.  Yes, we need to protect the ball better – a focus for tomorrow’s game.  A shooting percentage of 55 in the second half helped too and for the game we made 1.09 shots per possession.  Gradyn Childerhose had another solid game ending with 23 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.  Matt Myers let the team in assists with eight and hit some crucial 3’s to seal the win (17 points, eight rebounds and three steals).  Off the bench Lucas Mannes contributed with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one HUGE block.  Not wanting to be outdone, his roommate, Josiah Cockrill matched that block with his own defensive rejection.”

“Let me add that we had tremendous fan support tonight by many alumni and friends, which is so appreciated,” Adrian added.

Briercrest 87 – SAIT 71

“Another win on the road which clinches a playoff spot.  At 13-1 we continue our hold onto the top spot in the ACAC,” Adrian said.

“Tonight’s game was a more controlled contest against an often frustrated SAIT team.  Our relentless pressure on both ends wore them down and held them to only 10 points in the third quarter.  We let them back into it in the fourth while trying a few different things and working different matchups.  As the coach, that was on me, but once the starting group got back on the floor to do what we do best we literally ran away with it.”

“Player of the Game Gradyn Childerhose had 22 points and nine rebounds.  Another strong near triple double game by Matt Myers with 15 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, and a solid effort by Kendell Boese with 15 points.  Freshman standout Lucas Mannes finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.  As a team we had 29 assists “sharing the ball” and won the team rebounding battle by +19.  We did turn the ball over 24 times, but shot 50% as a team giving us 1.03 points per possession.”

“Our pre-game talks this weekend focused on 1 Cor. 9:22-27 “…But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified…”

“Once again we had great fan support from friends, family, and alumni with a few Board Members making it out, and especially some of my old teammates.”

Briercrest’s hosts Red Deer College Feb. 1-2 at the Margaret P. Reimer Memorial Gymnasium in Caronport. If you cannot make it to the game be sure to follow online at SportsCanada.tv or like Briercrest Basketball on Facebook.
