Briercrest looked to finish the road portion of their schedule with a bang as they played the Augustana Vikings. The men lost last night 10-2 and were not able to bounce back as the score was 8-1.

Jesse Chenard has been a huge part in the Briercrest line-up and he has become the all-time saves leader over his career in the ACAC and today he was able to secure another record, that being the most saves in a single season. Chenard only needed 15 saves but ended up making 39 to have a total of 1074 saves on the year.

The opening period was one that had both teams taking the body. There were four penalties in the period as three minors were called on Briercrest and one on Augustana. The Vikings were assessed a bench minor for too many men on the ice, whereas Briercrest was given hooking, slashing and holding minors. Augustana was able to make good on one of the power plays as well as score two even strength goals to take a 3-0 lead into the locker room. The shots in the period were 20-6 for Augustana, and with that Jesse Chenard grabbed the single saves record for an ACAC season.

The middle 20 was not much better than the first for Briercrest as they took two minor penalties both by Ryan Petersen. The Vikings were able to light the lamp 1:51 into the period and then add two more in the second half of the frame. Briercrest was not able to generate many scoring opportunities in the period. The shots for the period were 22-5 for Augustana and the total after the period was 42-11. The lead for the Vikings after two was 6-0.

The final frame was the closest period on the scoreboard as Briercrest lost it 2-1. Pierre Landry was the goal scorer for Briercrest as he received a pass from Austin Rock and he blasted it through the five hole of Augustana’s Paul Kolida. Augustana answered that goal quickly as 38 seconds later they scored to make it 7-1. The Vikings did add one more as the final score was 8-1.

The player of the game was Jesse Chenard for Briercrest and Dylan Coupal for Augustana.

Briercrest will finish out the season next weekend in front of their hometown fans at Barkman Arena. The men will look to finish strong as they host the Grant MacEwan Griffins.
