Briercrest wins fifth-place game for best finish since joining the ACAC

Briercrest women’s volleyball won the fifth place game 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-16) over Olds College in the ACAC Championships February 24, 2013. This is the best finish that Briercrest has had at the ACAC Provincial tournament after finishing in sixth at the 2009-10 and 2000-01 tournaments.

The first set was a tight contest with Olds beating Briercrest in a tight 25-23 game.

After dropping the first set, Briercrest came out with a vengeance in the second set, jumping to a quick 20-12 lead and not looking back and winning the second set 25-15.

Olds jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the third set before Briercrest fought back to take a d 6-3 lead. Briercrest continued to build the lead until forcing an Olds timeout with Briercrest leading 13-6. Olds responded out of the timeout with a four point run before Briercrest re-collected themselves to bring the score back up to 15-10. After Olds brought the score up to 16-13 Briercrest was forced to take a timeout. The teams played side-out volleyball for a while before Briercrest lifted the score to 21-15 forcing another Olds timeout. The two teams played side-out ball until Briercrest won the second set 25-19.

Briercrest jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead to start the third set before Olds fired back to take a 5-3 advantage and held the lead until Briercrest clawed back and took a 13-12 lead to force an Olds timeout. Briercrest built their lead to 18-14 to force an Olds timeout. Briercrest kept the pressure on to win the set 25-16 and the game 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-16).

Briercrest’s player of the game was Elly Wendel (first year; Caromport, SK) with a game high 14 kills, to go with two service aces, 11 digs and three blocks.

Game notes:

Briercrest held the edge in kills with 49, service aces with eight and blocks with 11 in comparison to Olds with 31, six and two respectively. Both teams had 69 digs.

Briercrest was led by the aforementioned Wendel, Erin Anderson for the third game in a row had a game high for aces this time with four service aces (14 in the three games) and a game high four blocks, and Starlet Peterson had a team high 17 digs.
