Men's basketball travels to Fort McMurray for the ACAC Championships

The only team in action this weekend is men's basketball as they travel to Fort McMurray for the ACAC Championship tournament. For timely information on all Briercrest teams be sure to "like" Briercrest Athletics on facebook.

Basketball

Men's basketball (19-1) will be travelling to Fort McMurray this weekend for ACAC Men's Basketball Championships March 1-3. The CCAA number one ranked Briercrest will be the number one seed and will be facing the eighth seeded Augustana who qualified for the tournament last weekend through the seventh to 10th place qualification tournament.

Game time will be 6:00 pm Friday, March 1, with the winner moving on to play the winner of Keyano and Concordia Saturday March 2 in the ACAC semi-final. Both the gold and the silver medalists at the Men's ACAC Championship will qualify for the CCAA Nationals at Cegep John Abbott College in Sainte Anne de Bellevue, QC March 14-16.

Volleyball

After losing in the quarter-finals to tournament host and number one seeded Red Deer College in five intense sets on Friday to open the ACAC Women's Volleyball Championships, eighth seed Briercrest went on a run and won their last two games of the tournament 3-2 over Medicine Hat College and 3-1 over Olds College to finish fifth in the tournament. This is the best finish that the program has had since joining the ACAC and the young team now has valuable playoff experience moving forward. None of the student-athletes had ever participated in the ACAC Championships before. Another highlight of the weekend was rookie outside hitter Elly Wendel (Caronport, SK) being selected First Team ACAC All-Conference.

The men's volleyball team traveled to Fort McMurray for the ACAC Championships as the fifth seed. The weekend started on a strong note with a convincing 3-1 win over fourth seed Medicine Hat College. Briercrest then faced ACAC number one seed Red Deer College and fell 3-0. Four the fourth straight year Briercrest played for a medal, this time against host Keyano College. For the first time in four years, Briercrest was not able to leave the tournament with a medal, falling to Keyano 3-0. Highlights of the weekend were Second Team All-Conference selections for left side Cody Quiring (fourth year; Langley, BC) and middle Josh Wendel (third year; Caronport, SK), as well as a tournament all-star selection for libero Pablo Acuna (fourth year; San Jose, Costa Rica).
