This week's featured faculty member is Grant Poettcker who will be joining Briercrest in September as a philosophy professor.
Where is home?
I grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
What excites you about the opportunity to teach at Briercrest?
The chance to interact with students and to learn together with them in an environment where you can discuss existential and religious concerns that arise from course material in a spirit of openness, and to pass on the faith to a new generation.
Do you have any specialized areas of study?
Philosophical theology, ethics, interdisciplinary studies, theories of virtue, aesthetics.
What is your proudest moment?
Tie: The birth of my two children, Josiah (2009) and Alina (2011).
What are your hobbies?
Spending time with my wife and children; sports – basketball, volleyball and softball; cooking and entertaining friends; reading.
What is your favourite novel?
The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
What are two top selections in your music collection?
Dvorak’s New World Symphony; Fleet Foxes
What’s on the top of your bucket list?
Making it back to Hawaii; Attending a San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl win.
If you could spend the day with any two famous people (living or dead) who would it be and why?
Søren Kierkegaard, because he was a man of faith, and a deep thinker, and despite the sobriety of his works, apparently a lively and entertaining conversationalist as well.
Ludwig Wittgenstein, because his philosophy is fascinating and because he had such an effect on the people he met and was so beloved by them.
