The Briercrest’s mens basketball team defeated King’s early on in the game. The Briercrest Clippers came in strong, commanding a big lead at the end of the first quarter, claiming a 87-75 victory over King’s.

Briercrest took control in the first quarter allowing only two points off free throws before answering back, not allowing King’s to get a word in edgewise. James Wohlgeschaffen, Josiah Cockrill and Christian Sacoman all drained threes before the quarter ended, putting Briercrest up on King’s 28-11. 

The second quarter began with some new Clipper faces on the court. Coach Rod Adrian was pleased with how his players stepped up.

He commented, “They all got some good touches on the floor.”

Lucas Mannes opened the score with a few balls in the bucket, and an extra from Brandon Friesen distanced Briercrest even further from King’s, 33-11. King’s responded, gaining but not disabling Briercrest’s 22 point lead, the score 37-28 at halftime.

Coach Adrian continued switching up the line in the third quarter, subbing in every dressed player at one point or another. Briercrest continued to maintain and extended their lead, going into the fourth quarter up 64-45.

Adrian acknowledged Wohlgeschaffen as a key component to their scoring. 

“James Wohlgeschaffen really stepped up his intensity on defense which created a lot of opportunities for us on offense.”

Cockrill dropped a three in early in the fourth quarter, putting Briercrest up 67-49. Mannes and Wohlgeschaffen were both high scorers throughout the game, the end result 87-75.

Players of the game were King’s Sander Lekas with 19 points and Briercrest’s Lucas Mannes. Lucas had an outstanding game with 13 rebounds, nine assists, three steals and 25 points.

James Wohlgeschaffen was consistent with a 3-3 three point record. Brandon Friesen had Briercrest’s only two blocks.

Briercrest shot 50% on their field goal attempts compared to King’s 32.6%. King’s was 9-30 on their 3-point attempts and Briercrest was 4-19. Rebounds were fairly similar as Briercrest had 45 and King’s had 40. Briercrest had only slightly more turnovers; 22 to King’s 13.

 

Briercrest takes on Grande Prairie Regional College Saturday, October 26 in the Margaret P. Reimer Memorial gymnasium at 8:00pm.
