Briercrest gets swept by Medicine Hat

Posted: November 2, 2013

Briercrest women’s basketball found themselves in an early hole that they were unable to dig out of against Medicine College both days this weekend, losing 70-54 on Friday and 66-49 on Saturday.

Head coach Chad Romanuk explained Friday’s loss.

“Tonight against Medicine Hat, we found ourselves behind after the first quarter 18-4. Our slow start got the best of us as we finished the next three quarters fairly even, winning the 4th quarter by five points.

“Krista Wiens was player of the game, with seven boards and two-for-two shooting. Brooke Briscoe had a game high 15 points, with two-for-three from the three-point line and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Tracy Frimpong and Amy Wanvig both chipped in for eight points and Kennedy Sawatzky had seven points.

Saturday was much the same except Briercrest began each half flat before ending the half strong. This was highlighted by quickly falling behind 20-6 in the first quarter only to storm back and win the second quarter 16-9 and be down by only 29-22 at the half.

Meghan Friesen and Amy Wanvig led the way for Briercrest on offense, each scoring 14 points. Friesen also had a team high eight rebounds. Brooke Briscoe led Briercrest with two blocks and Kennedy Sawatzky had three steals.

Briercrest has a bye weekend next week, which will be welcomed as they have a few players recovering from injuries, before hitting the road to Edmonton November 22 and 23.
