Thunder rolls over Briercrest
Briercrest got off to a slow start in the first quarter. Concordia came out a strong offensive force for Briercrest to contend with. Free throws by Claire Richardson brought Briercrest into the points game on the downside of 6-2. Concordia extended a 19-5 lead before Briercrest called a time out. Tracy Frimpong had the remainder of Briercrest’s points during game time, down 25-9 at the end of the first.
Briercrest worked in the second quarter to tighten up their game and swing the momentum in their favor. A hand off from Amy Wanvig to Kennedy Sawatzky right under the basket brought Briercrest closer, down 27-13. Wanvig continued to score, Concordia finally calling a time out at 34-17. Frimpong had a breakaway, adding some excitement to the quarter. Briercrest finished the quarter down 43-27.
The third quarter remained an uphill battle for the Clippers. Wanvig, Richardson and Friesen were Briercrest’s scorers for the quarter and Meghan Friesen dropped in a three which generated Briercrest excitement. The quarter ended 64-38 in favor for Concordia.
No sooner had the fourth quarter started, Wanvig scored three consecutive baskets as well as a free throw, bringing Briercrest up 45-66. A succession of three-pointers from Concordia increased their lead on Briercrest 78-45 at a Briercrest time out with five minutes left. Brooke Briscoe and Meghan Friesen added Briercrest’s remaining points, ending down 90-53.
Amy Wanvig was Briercrest’s player of the game shooting 3-3 free throws, six rebounds, one assist, and 17 points. Claire Richardson tied for game high 11 rebounds, Nicole Meyer had team high four assists and Tracy Frimpong had 2 steals.
Meghan McIntosh was Concordia’s player of the game with one steal, two assist, 11 rebounds and 17 overall points.
