Posted: January 17, 2014

The Briercrest men’s volleyball team followed the women’s example, defeating NAIT in a shut out, winning 25-22, 25-23, and 25-14.

There was no give in the scoring throughout the first set. No team got more than a couple points before the other would answer back. The low ceiling proved to be an additional obstacle for NAIT, Briercrest taking advantage of the points given them later on in the set. Briercrest enjoyed a short 18-16 break, before NAIT came back to tie it out at 21-21. Brad Harms served the Clippers up 24-22 and Carter Reimer tipped it over to score the final point, Briercrest winning the set 25-22. Strong hitting by Josh Wendel, Josh Senneker and Jachin Karg helped Briercrest crack NAIT’s defense.

Josh Senneker shanked it off a NAIT player, generating excitement at the beginning of the second set. After a 3-1 opening for Briercrest, NAIT came back and a definite lead remained up for grabs, evening out 8-8. Briercrest struggled to reign in the Dukes, calling a time out down 9-13. Briercrest trailed at this distance until 14-19. Momentum grew as Karg and Reimer laid down hits. Wendel shut down many NAIT attacks, giving Briercrest the edge to pull even at 20-20. Scoring continued to be back and forth and a huge block by Harms as well as wicked serving from Senneker brought the set to a close, 25-23 in favor of Briercrest.

Reimer opened the third set, serving Briercrest up 3-0. Briercrest maintained a comfortable lead throughout the extending to 14-8 when NAIT pulled a surprising move, bringing in a whole new line.  Briercrest continued to extend their lead, 17-11 before trading in players one by one. Jonah Johnson was brought in to serve, serving Briercrest to 20-12. Keaton Strom, Joel Rosewarn and Jason Wendel were fresh faces, each scoring, Briercrest up 23-13. A NAIT player took a hit with his head, and Reimer shocked everyone with a spinner, to close the set 25-14.

Players of the game were NAIT’s Jordan Teliske with eight kills and 11 digs and Briercrest’s Jachin Karg with a high 12 kills, two aces, three digs and a high four blocks. Briercrest dominated with 38 kills to NAIT’s 25. Briercrest got eight aces while NAIT had three. Digs were 46-36 for Briercrest. Briercrest had 14 blocks compared to NAIT’s five.

Briercrest looks to repeat tonight’s outcome tomorrow afternoon at 3:00pm against NAIT in the Margaret P. Reimer Memorial Gymnasium.
