Briercrest repeats 3-0 shut out against NAIT
Briercrest fans were eager for a repeat of last night’s shut out again NAIT and the men’s basketball team did not disappoint, winning in three straight sets, 25-22, 28-26, 25-18.
Consistent serving from Carter Reimer early in the first set brought the Clippers up from 1-1 to 6-1 before an early NAIT time out. NAIT picked up their socks and closed in on Briercrest slightly, despite the strong attacks Briercrest sent towards NAIT, 13-11. Cody Quiring was a force to contend with, scoring multiple points consecutively with his kills. Briercrest up 23-16, NAIT answered back in a big way, coming back only behind 24-22. Quiring scored the final point and Briercrest took the set 25-22.
The teams exchanged one to two point leads throughout the second set. Josh Senneker and Quiring were Briercrest’s big hitters for the set. Briercrest finally broke away and strong blocking put up a wall NAIT struggled to break, gaining 21-16. NAIT came out of their time out scoring a string of points, now behind only 21-20. A time out gave Briercrest a chance to regroup and they continued to battle NAIT point for point until they won the set 28-26. Jachin Karg served a series of points towards the beginning of the third set and continued to hammer them in despite NAIT’s efforts to disrupt him, serving up from 4-4 to 11-4. Briercrest’s lead stretched to 14-5. In the plays that followed, some incredible saves were made, keeping excitement in the air. NAIT called for time out down 20-10. NAIT closed in slightly, 21-16 but Briercrest easily commanded the remainder of the set. Jonah Johnson put away two back-to-back kills and Brad Harms finished off the set with a kill of his own 25-18.
Players of the game were Trevor Zemlak of NAIT with two blocks, seven kills and ten digs and Carter Reimer of Briercrest with four blocks, two aces, and eight digs. Josh Senneker led with 11 kills, Jachin Karg with three aces as well as five blocks.
The teams were nearly tied with kills. Briercrest out served NAIT with seven to one aces. Briercrest blocked 15 hits while NAIT blocked seven.
Briercrest plays #1 ranked Red Deer next weekend January 24-25 at home, 8:00pm on Friday and 3:00pm on Saturday.
