Briercrest falls to Red Deer in three sets

Briercrest came in after a three set loss last night, looking to split the weekend against the top ranked Red Deer tema.

Briercrest got off to a rocky start in the first set, Red Deer claiming an early 7-2 lead before Briercrest called a time out in an effort to break up the momentum. From there Red Deer ran away with the score. Regan Kooyman and Brooklyn Dyck came in at 12-20, the remainder of the set was in the control of the Queens, commanding the first set 25-14.

Briercrest matched Red Deer point for point until 3-3, staying close until 6-4. Red Deer got seven unanswered points until Briercrest was able to interject, 13-5. Briercrest struggled to shut down Red Deer’s attacks, many shots dropping right behind them. Briercrest trailed at a distance before Red Deer extended its lead 24-14. Brooklyn Dyck was a welcomed addition on the court, putting away some great kills. Starlet Peterson served to close the Clippers  in 17-24, Red Deer winning the final point after a time out, 25-17.

Both Brooklyn Dyck and Deanna Wall’s aces highlighted the third set early on. Briercrest played from behind, 3-8, coming in to close the gap and even out at 8-8. Red Deer had a huge run, up 15-11, before Briercrest had a chance to respond. Briercrest rallied back and nearly pulled even 17-18. They continued to fight for the remaining points, narrowly missing it 21-25.

Players of the game were Brooke Sutter of Red Deer with nine digs and six kills and Brooklyn Dyck of  Briercrest with five digs, one ace and five kills. Samantha Zacharias led Briercrest with six kills, and Brooke Peterson with 18 digs.

Briercrest volleyball travels to Alberta to play Augustana next weekend, January 31 and February 1 the women playing at 6:00pm on Friday and 1:00pm on Saturday.
