A nail biting 3rd period produces a good finish for Briercrest’s last home game

Posted: February 22, 2014

Briercrest hockey’s final home game of the year once again took a slow start. Just over three minutes into the period an opportunity opened up for Concordia to jump ahead as they put their first past Briercrest goaltender #1 Connor Dobberthien. An uneventful end to the period saw chances going both ways but no team being able to capitalize. The hopes of a final home game win of the season still loomed in the Barkman arena as Briercrest hit the dressing room looking to improve in the 2nd period.

It didn’t take long for Briercrest to get back into the game as they entered the 2nd period. Just one minute in #24 Luke Robitaille, playing in his last home game with a Briercrest jersey on, put one past the Concordia net-minder after a good feed by #21 Joachim Hanberg to tie things up. Mid-way through the 2nd period a nice shot by Concordia player #7 got tipped in front and unfortunately for Briercrest snuck by Dobberthien to put Concordia back up by one. Briercrest had their eyes set on a win as they went into the 2nd period intermission.

The 3rd period was nothing short of memorable. While the majority of the period was scoreless with play going both ways, it came down to a time out call by Briercrest with a minute and eighteen seconds left and the Briercrest net empty. As the puck dropped in the oppositions zone Briercrest along with its extra attacker crowded the net. Just nine seconds into the play, as all of Briercrest jammed away at the puck, a lucky #16 Brennan Gasmo got the equalizer and the Barkman arena went crazy. As time dwindled down it was clear that this game was heade for overtime. A nail biting overtime saw chances for both teams yet no one was able to take advantage of the 4-on-4 play. Final score was tied 2 to 2. Shots on net 21 Briercrest and 48 Concordia.

Briercrest Athletics would like to congratulate both Luke Robitaille and Brennan Gasmo in getting goals in their last home game for Briercrest.

Players of the game: Briercrest’s #24 Luke Robitaille with 1 goal and Concordia #30 Rhys Hadfield with 19 saves.
