Briercrest women’s volleyball completes the sweep of Lethbridge

Posted: November 8, 2014

Briercrest hosted the Lethbridge Kodiaks for the second set of games this afternoon. Coming off an exciting 3-1 win last night, Briercrest confidently took the floor to extend their winning streak.  Lethbridge looked to adjust and play an entire game similar to that of their first set the game prior. Both teams have competed hard thus far, making today’s game highly anticipated.

The first set saw a much more dominant Briercrest team. With exceptional serving from Laura Cornelsen, and Mikayla Reinhardt hitting extremely well, Briercrest took an early lead. Lethbridge did prove to be resilient, capitalizing on some unforced errors on the Briercrest side. Cornelsen, though, ended the set as she started it, finishing with two service aces to give Briercrest the 25-17 win.

The Lethbridge Kodiaks controlled the majority of the second set. With more disciplined play, a strong blocking presence and consistent service they managed to fight back after a first set loss. Reinhardt’s serving and extensive hitting arsenal kept Briercrest competing. The tidy efforts of Lethbridge gave way for a second set victory on their end, finishing with a score of 25-20.

Going into the third set tied 1-1, both teams began with much more discipline than the previous set. Zacharias’s serves sent Briercrest into motion on the offensive end, giving her team a 9-2 lead early on. Briercrest fed off that momentum, Amanda Lundquist and Kathleen Bruce playing strong and disciplined volleyball extended Briercrest’s already comfortable lead. The Kodiaks were unable to gather themselves enough to make a comeback, and the third set ended with Briercrest victory and a score of 25-11.

The fourth set saw more of Lethbridge’s lack of defensive strength. Lundquist’s serving began Briercrest’s climb alongside strong passes from freshman libero Ali Johnson. Cornelsen attacked well and pushed their lead further as well, mid-set Briercrest held a 13-5 lead. Service errors and further defensive disorganization allowed Briercrest to maintain their lead. Lethbridge struggled once more to fight back through the efficient play of Briercrest, despite the resiliency they showed in the final moments of the game bringing the lead down to 24-18.  The final score of the fourth set was 25-18.

Briercrest was dominant in every area of the game today, including securing 40 kills to Lethbridge’s 19, 30 assists to 18, and 28 service aces to 5.

The final score for the entirety of the game was 3 sets to 1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-11, 25-18) for Briercrest.

Players of the game tonight were Larissa Vonkeman for the Lethbridge Kodiaks and Laura Cornelsen for Briercrest.  Cornelsen had 7 kills, 9 service aces, and a game high 16 digs.

Other outstanding players on the side of Briercrest today were Sam Zacharias with game highs of 13 kills and 12 aces, Amanda Lundquist with a game high of 21 assists, Kathleen Bruce with a team high three blocks and Mikayla Reinhardt with 7 kills and 7 digs.
