Dual-sport athlete Krista Wiens looks fondly on her short time at Briercrest
Krista Wiens, #18, is from Elmira Ontario and in her second year at Briercrest studying to obtain her Biblical Studies Certificate. The Biblical Studies Program was one of the main draws for Krista, into attending Briercrest. The Christian atmosphere and the fact that she had two older siblings previously attend here also helped shape her decision to come and play. Originally starting out as a point guard, Wiens has moved into the role as a guard. Coach Will Con says Krista’s biggest strengths are her positivity and encouragement that she brings to practices and games as well as her ability to drive the ball.
Playing Basketball has taught Krista that winning isn’t everything and that one should play for enjoyment. Basketball is not the be all and end all and it is a good way to get to know new people. The last thing that playing has taught her is to work hard.
Krista’s athletic ability at Briercrest has not been limited to basketball only, as this past fall she was part of the women’s softball team. Her hard work is displayed in all that she does, as she started out as a rookie on the softball team, however, towards the end of the season Wiens became a starter. In both teams she brings a cool head, lots of encouragement, and the ability to persevere.
Wiens’ hard work is seen in her academics as she set goals for herself both as a student and as well as an athlete. Her aim is to go through college without pulling all-nighters to complete her assignments and to be diligent during the free time she has. In basketball, she aims to be an asset to the team and not a burden, even if this means working harder to get better.
Krista’s favourite moments here at Briercrest have been helping out with YouthQuake being on Here4U. As well, she said cheering alongside the sea of yellow and being a part of the Briercrest Nation for Volleyball Nationals was a highlight. However, she has really enjoyed being part of the basketball team and has said that what is so special about her team is that she is able to get to know her teammates on a deeper level compared to other teams. This has been through Bible study and sharing testimonies, as well as the long road trips and rooming with the team.
The Bible verse that has meant the most to Wiens is 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity but, of power, love and self-discipline.” This is because she sees herself as a quiet person, timid person and to know that God has given her a spirit that is not a timid one helps her be confident in everyday life. This is especially so when she is sharing the Gospel because she knows she is not alone. The spirit of self-discipline has definitely shaped her with her school work and with her basketball.
This weekend is Krista’s last weekend to be playing on a Briercrest team as she is returning home after exams. What she wants to do with the rest of her life she has not yet quite figured out. She says tree planting this summer is a possibility, or going to Madagascar and seeing her brother and helping with the Mercy Ship there. In the future Wiens would like to do something that is active and that helps people out
We wish Krista well and are sad to see her leave, and pray that God continues to work through her.
