After holding lead into the fourth quarter, Briercrest women's basketball falls short

Briercrest women's basketball tipped off against Red Deer College in the final games of the first half of the 2014-15 season. Both teams were looking for their first wins of the season. The game started slowly with neither team getting a basket until Red Deer opened the scoring 1:30 into the game. The teams went back and forth stalling out at 7-6 for Briercrest until Red Deer hit two free throws and a basket to take the lead 10-7 lead. The teams exchanged baskets and free throws to end the quarter 12-9 for Red Deer. 

Briercrest came out strong in the second quarter building a quick 16-12 lead. Briercrest and Red Deer exchanged free throws to bring the score to 18-14 before a Red Deer three forced a timeout at 18-17. Red Deer scored a three and two more baskets out of the timeout to take the lead 24-18 before Any Wanvig scored a basket and free throw to cut the score 24-21. Briercrest went on a 9-3 run to take a 31-24 lead. Briercrest took a 33-29 lead into half time. 

Briercrest jumped out to a 39-31 lead to start the second half before Red Deer stormed back to make it 39-36. A Nicole Chenard three once again extended the Briercrest lead to 42-36. The teams then exchanged baskets before Briercrest extended their lead to 49-38.  Red Deer cut the score to 49-45 to end the third quarter.

Red Deer started the fourth quarter quickly cutting the score to 49-48, forcing a Briercrest timeout. Red Deer brought the score to 49-49 before the teams continued to exchange baskets, Briercrest regaining the lead and Red Deer tying it up again. A Hannah Klassen three brought the score to 55-52 before Red Deer made a basket and free throw. Red Deer took their first lead since the first quarter off two free throws to make the score 57-55. Red Deer extended their lead to 61-56 before Brooke Olmstead went to the free throw line making the score 61-56. Red Deer built their lead to 67-57 and then teams exchanged baskets, but Red Deer took the game 72-59.

Players of the game were Aneca Fretts for Red Deer and Krista Wiens for Briercrest. Wiens had a four rebounds, six points, three assists and one steal in her final game at the Margaret P. Reimer Memorial Gymnasium. Amy Wanvig had a team high 10 rebounds and 18 points, Tracy Frimpong had a game high five assists and Nicole Chenard had a game high three steals.

Briercrest outrebounded Red Deer 41-38. Red Deer had the edge in assists 15-11, blocks 6-2 and steals 12-10.

Briercrest and Red Deer finish off the first half of the season in Moose Jaw tomorrow afternoon. The game will be at 2:30 pm at Saskatchewan Polytechnic - Moose Jaw (formerly SIAST - Palliser).
