Briercrest falls to top ranked Red Deer in close game
Briercrest faced the Red Deer Kings on December 4, 2014 in the Margaret P. Reimer Memorial Gymnasium, fondly known as the hanger. Red Deer took the first point with a layup. Habib Habib made his comeback clear after his injury after making a three-point shot. Josh Tippe took a foul and made it 7-4 for Briercrest. Julian Apakoh followed behind with force adding two points. Keon Bennett went in for a layup 13-8 for Briercrest. Habib added a point, 17-12 for Briercrest. Jared Wicks took a steal which later turned over to Red Deer, 17-16 for Briercrest which put the score close.
The second quarter: Red Deer took the first shot 18-17 for Red Deer. Apakoh then dunked with power which gave Briercrest an extra two points. Bennett followed with a layup 22-21 for Briercrest. Red Deer took a timeout after Apakoh put in a layup 24-23 for Briercrest. Josh Klassen put up a three which tied the scoreboard 26-26. Bennett added an easy layup. Theo Block swished a three which again tied the scoreboard 33-33. The half ended 38-33 for Red Deer.
The third quarter began with Red Deer taking the first couple of points 44-33 for Red Deer. Briercrest took a timeout after Red Deer added a couple of points. Bennett put up a layup 50-37 for Red Deer. Josh Tippe put up a three pointer 54-42 for Red Deer. Apakoh took a foul and made both shots. Tippe followed with two foul shots and made both shot, 58-46 for Red Deer. Red Deer turned the ball over which enabled Briercrest to put in points 63-49 for Red Deer. Block ended the quarter and swished a three-pointer 64-54 for Red Deer with Briercrest not too far behind.
Fourth quarter: Klassen made two points 69-56 for Red Deer. Apakoh put up a three 71-59 for Red Deer. Briercrest took a timeout 73-61 for Red Deer. Tippe forced a layup 75-63 for Red Deer. Habib powered through and put up a three-pointer 75-66 for Red Deer. Habib put in two foul shots 82-68 for Red Deer. Red Deer took a timeout 83-68. The game concluded 85-72 for Red Deer.
Players of the game were Tyler Wise for Red Deer and Keon Bennett for Briercrest. Bennett had 14 points, three rebounds, a team high four assists and two steals. Habib Habib had a team high 17 points, and Josh Klassen had a team high seven rebounds.
Briercrest had three blocks to Red Deer’s two, while Red Deer won the rebound battle 44-27, assists 20-11 and steals 15-7.
Briercrest and Red Deer finish off the first half of the season in Moose Jaw tomorrow afternoon. The game will be at 4:30 pm at Saskatchewan Polytechnic - Moose Jaw (formerly SIAST - Palliser).
