Briercrest teams back in action this weekend

All of the Briercrest Athletic's teams are back in action this weekend with hockey hosting Keyano, volleyball hosting Medicine Hat and the basketball teams travelling to Dickinson State.

Hockey

After a successful sweep of Williston State to kick off the second semester, the Briercrest men's hockey team will host Keyano College to start the second semester of ACAC action. This is an important weekend for Briercrest as they currently sit in eighth place in the ACAC (3-14-1), six points back of the last playoff spot that is currently held by Red Deer. Keyano currently sits in fifth place with a 9-6-3 record. Briercrest will be led by rookie centre Aaron Armstrong who currently sits tied for second in the ACAC for goals with 10 and third in points with 23.

The hockey team has also added three new players to their roster this semester with forwards Matt Melo (1st; Appin, ON; Certificate of Seminary) and Josh Peters (1st; La Crete, AB; Open Studies) and the return of defenseman Daniel Stollery (3rd; Camrose, AB; Open Studies).

Game times at the Barkman Arena will be 7:00 pm Friday, Jan. 9 and 2:00 pm Saturday, Jan. 10.

Volleyball

The Briercrest volleyball teams kick off the second semester of ACAC competition this weekend as they host Medicine Hat College.

This is a big weekend for the men's volleyball team (6-6) as they look to move into a playoff position in the tight ACAC South Division. The top four teams in the division qualify for the playoffs and Briercrest currently sits in fifth place one win behind both SAIT and Lethbridge. Medicine Hat (9-3) set in second place in the Division and are ranked eighth in the CCAA national rankings. Briercrest is led by Zac Ens (5th; Waldheim, SK; Social Sciences) who is fourth in the ACAC South with 3.0 kills/set and Carter Reimer (4th; Calgary, AB; Christian Ministries) who is second in the ACAC South with 8.6 assists/set.

The CCAA nationally sixth ranked Briercrest women's volleyball team is tied with Red Deer College for first in the ACAC with a record of 11-1. They will host a young Medicine Hat team (3-9) that currently sits outside of the playoff in fifth in the ACAC South division. Briercrest is led by Samantha Zacharias (1st; Waldheim, SK; Business Administration) who leads the nation with 3.91 kills/set and the ACAC with 1.4 service aces/set, and Amanda Lunquist (4th; Surrey, BC; Applied Lingustics) who leads the ACAC South with 8.7 assists/set.

Game times at the Margaret P. Reimer Memorial Gymnasium will be Friday, Jan. 9 at 6:00 pm for the women followed by 8:00 pm for the men and Saturday, Jan. 10 at 1:00 pm for the women and 3:00 pm for the men.

Basketball

The Briercrest basketball teams will tip-off the 2015 season by travelling south of the border to play Dickinson State University for a pair of games this weekend.

Both teams are looking to begin the winter semester on a winning note to make a good second half drive. The men are led by Ryan Penner (2nd; Winkler, MB; Business Administration) who is fifth in the ACAC South with 15.30 points/game and the women are led by Amy Wanvig (2nd; Calgary, AB; Applied Linguistics).

Game times will be Friday, Jan.9 with the women at 6:00 and men following at 8:00 pm and the Saturday, Jan. 10 with women tipping off at 1:00 pm and men at 3:00 pm.
