Posted: January 24, 2015

The Briercrest men’s basketball team played another home game this afternoon against the Olds Broncos with the final score being 102-74 for the visiting team. Briercrest played a hard game and their first quarter was definitely the best.

Briercrest came into the game strong with Julian Apakoh opening up with a right side three-pointer. Josh Klassen and Brandon Friesen were able to bring in some points by forcing fouls on the other team. The last few seconds of the quarter had the Clippers down by 1 and with a second to spare Apakoh made another three-pointer to end the quarter with Briercrest leading 22-20.

After ending the first quarter on a high note, Briercrest kept their intensity up and Ryan Penner got his second deep three-pointer of the game early on, followed by another shortly after. With two and a half minutes remaining both teams each had 4 fouls, clearing reflecting how much each team wanted to win. The second quarter ended with the Broncos leading 48-37.

The third started off with Olds playing a more pressured game than the first half. Jared Wicks played a strong quarter on the defensive side, but brought in many points for his team as well. Taran Garchinki hit a three-pointer that helped the team get some more excitement back into the game. The final score going into the fourth was 80-59 for Broncos.

Brandon Chow started off the last ten minutes of the game with a right side corner three. Briercrest did a good job this quarter to pick up and correct the small mistakes down by the basket to add in points. They worked the ball around well and kept the game interesting until the end, continuing to draw fouls and run hard.

The Player of the Game for the Olds Broncos was number  6 Sam Kirkness and for the Briercrest Clippers was number 14 Josh Klassen who had 13 points, 3 assists and 7 rebounds. Julian Apakoh had a game high 20 points and 14 rebounds and Jared Wicks and Taran Garchinski each had 5 rebounds.
