Anderson and Lundquist lead women’s volleyball to 3-0 sweep

Posted: February 13, 2015

A busy weekend for the Briercrest community consisting of YouthQuake and volleyball games had the women’s volleyball team facing the Ambrose Lions. The match ended in three sets for the Briercrest Clippers and had final set scores of 25-17, 25-13 and an exciting final set of 26-24.

Ambrose opened up the game with the serve where they caught the first few points of the match. Briercrest didn’t let the opposing team get much of a lead before they took it back with hits from Mikayla Reinhardt, Whitney Zylstra and Janae Rapley early on. Briercrest particularly came together nearing the end of the set with fantastic communication and their joy as a team in the game was very apparent! They ended winning the set 25-17 on a great double block by Sam Zacharias and Zylstra.

The second set was as high energy as the first, if not more, with Reinhardt opening up with the serve and Briercrest successfully gaining four points within moments of the first whistle. Amanda Lundquist this set was fond of the tip over in order to win points. Erin Anderson had several blocks this set and kept the team high in spirit. Briercrest took this set with a final score of 25-13.

First point in the game had Anderson going up for a kill with an unsuccessful block by Ambrose. Laura Cornelsen, the libero for Briercrest, had many clean passes that set the team up for a winning set. The Lions were playing a much better set while Briercrest made more unforced errors than the previous two. The guest team held the lead with one point to go but Briercrest was able to tie it up 24-24 when a time-out was called. Rapley put up the serve and Reinhardt finished the 25th point with a spike that couldn’t be matched and did it again to win the set and match 26-24.

The Player of the Game for the Ambrose Lions was #2 Brooklyn Dyck and for Briercrest was Erin Anderson who had 7 kills, 3 assists and 5 blocks. Sam Zacharias had a game high 9 kills and 11 digs, Amanda Lundquist had a game high 26 assists, Whitney Zylstra had a game high five blocks and Mikayla Reinhardt had a game high 14 digs.

The women’s team will play again tomorrow afternoon at 1PM in the Briercrest gym and will be the final home game for the teams seniors Amanda Lundquist and Erin Anderson.
