Briercrest women sweep ACAC Championship quarter-final match

Posted: February 26, 2015

It was an exciting day in Olds as the Briercrest women’s volleyball team won their quarterfinal match at the conference championships.

Briercrest showed a strong start in the first set by moving the ball around and using all of their attacking options.  In a rematch of the 2013-14 ACAC quarterfinal, Briercrest faced off against the King's University Eagles. In a game facing off squads coached by the ACAC North division coach of year from King's in Grace Scott and ACAC South Coach of the Year Nolan Weinmaster, Briercrest jumped out to the quick one set lead off of a 25-21 win.

King's jumped out to a quick lead in the second set, but as the game wore on Briercrest showed that their CCAA 5th ranking was justified.  They were consistently making smart plays and moving the ball around to key players at key times.  They won the second set 25-20.

The third set once again saw King's jump out to a lead, but ACAC south Coach of the Year Nolan Weinmaster called a quick time-out down 4-8 and Briercrest cruised from there to win the third and final set 25-15, and the game 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-15).

Briercrest won every statistical battle in the game except for blocks which King's had 9 to Briercrest's 7. Briercrest led 34-16 for kills, 33-15 for assists, 10-3 for aces and 44-37 for digs.

Top performers for Briercrest were ACAC Player of the Year Samantha Zacharias with a game high 11 kills, six service aces and 11 digs to go with a team high two blocks. Mikayla Reinhardt also had a game high 11 kills to go with seven digs. Amanda Lundquist had a game high 32 assists to go with three service aces and four digs.

With this win Briercrest advances to the semi-final tomorrow against the winner of the game between SAIT and Grande Prairie.  Game time is 6 pm (Alberta time).
