Women’s volleyball comes from behind to defeat SAIT in four

This weekend Briercrest Volleyball had their home opener against SAIT along with the Alumni Weekend. Alumnus from throughout the years came to watch the game and be recognized after the game.

After losing the first set, the Briercrest women’s volleyball team won the next three to defeat SAIT 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18).

The game started off with Briercrest and SAIT battling point-for-point until SAIT pulled ahead with a 12-8 lead causing Briercrest to take a time out. Briercrest made some good defensive plays giving them some momentum back and coming up with key defensive plays. The new momentum wasn’t quite enough allowing SAIT to win the first set with a score of 25-23.

The second set started off with both teams scoring points back-and-forth making for a tense start to the set. With some amazing defensive plays by Briercrest they were able to keep the score close. After Briercrest pulled ahead 23-21, SAIT felt the pressure and called time out. Briercrest was able to carry the momentum through till the end of the set with a score of 25-21.

SAIT came into the third set ready giving them a 6-1 lead right away. Briercrest felt the heat and came back bringing the score up to a 20-18 lead for SAIT. There were great defensive plays by both teams. With Briercrest’s hard work they were able to come back and win the set 25-23.

Briercrest came back into the fourth with energy giving them a 10-5 lead causing SAIT to call a time out. With Briercrest players and fans’ energy high Briercrest was able to increase the lead 19-12 causing SAIT to take another time out. With SAIT unable to gain their own momentum, Briercrest came out with the win of 25-18 giving them their first home game win of the season.

Sam Zacharias was awarded Player of the Game for Briercrest by alumnus Erin Anderson. Zacharias had 12 digs, 2 service aces and 1 block along with a game high of 16 kills. Ashley Zacharias had a game high of 30 assists. Janae Rapley also had a game high of 5 service aces along with Kathleen Bruce having a game high of 2 blocks.

Briercrest dominated in the stats category with 40-33 for kills, 32-28 assists, 13-10 service aces and 5-4 blocks. SAIT was able to get 68 digs to Briercrest’s 66.
