Sawatzky shines in Friday nights home opening loss to SAIT
This weekend Briercrest Volleyball had their home opener against SAIT along with the Alumni Weekend. Alumnus from throughout the years came to watch the game and be recognized after the game.
The Briercrest men’s volleyball team had an exciting end to their game, but fell to SAIT 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 33-31).
Briercrest came into the first set with a steady lead by making good defensive plays and moving the ball well. Shortly after SAIT came back and took the lead. With the game staying close and the crowd wild Briercrest started to fall behind. Unable to come back, SAIT won the first set 25-20.
Right away in the second set, Briercrest fell behind 11-5 causing them to call timeout. They started to rally back at the end but came up short with SAIT winning the second set 18-25.
Briercrest came in the third set ready with taking the lead first. With each team staying only 1 or 2 points within each other, the tension and energy started to rise. After a super close and long set SAIT took the final set with a score of 33-31.
Calvin Sawatzky was awarded Player of the Game for Briercrest from alumnus David Vandenberg. Sawatzky had 4 kills, 1 block, a team high of 9 digs and a game high of 4 service aces. Taylor Klassen had a team high of 8 kills while Sawatsky and Carter Reimer both had a team high of 9 digs. Reimer and Brad Harms both had a game high of 2 blocks.
SAIT took lead in the stats with 37-25 for kills, 31 to 23 for assists, and 51-41 for digs. Briercrest took the lead in blocks though with 7-3.
