Women’s volleyball beats Red Deer’s two time CCAA champions in four

This weekend Briercrest women’s volleyball played against last year’s top team Red Deer College.

After four intense sets Briercrest’s women’s volleyball team defeated Red Deer 3-1 (25-19, 25-13, 11-25, 25-19).

The game started off with both teams battling point-for-point. Briercrest quickly started to take the lead though causing Red Deer to call a time out at 12-8 for Briercrest. Briercrest, looking to finish off the set with a win, called a timeout at 19-17 for Briercrest. Red Deer was unable to close the gap giving Briercrest the first set 25-19.

Briercrest came back strong in the second set with having a lead of 10-1. With amazing plays made by Briercrest they were able to keep the big lead. They kept their energy high and momentum going allowing them to win the second set 25-13.

Red Deer wasn’t ready to give up and came into the third set ready. Starting off the set with a tight score Red Deer started to pull ahead. Briercrest called time out after falling behind 18-11 with hopes of being able to battle back. Briercrest was unable to come back giving Red Deer the third set 11-25.

Looking for the win, Briercrest came into the fourth ready. Briercrest took the lead early but Red Deer battled back making it for a close set again. Briercrest took a time out with a score of 19-19. After the timeout Briercrest came back energized allowing them to win the set at 25-19 giving them the win.

Kathleen Bruce was awarded Player of the game by one of Briercrest’s professors, Lori Peters. Bruce had a game high of six service aces and four blocks. She also had four digs and three kills for the game. Mikayla Reinhardt and Sam Zacharias had a game high of 12 kills. Ashley Zacharias had a game high of 31 assists while Janae Rapley had a game high of 18 digs.

Briercrest swept the stats category by having 37-32 for kills, 32-31 for assists, 12-11 for service aces, 63-57 for digs and 5-3 for blocks.
