Mens Basketball starts off strong but loses to Medicine Hat in Home Opener
This weekend Briercrest Basketball had their home opener against Medicine Hat along with Alumni Weekend. Alumni from throughout the years came to watch the game and to be recognized after the game.
Briercrest came into their home opener strong. Both teams were battling point-for-point making the energy on the court high. Briercrest made key defensive plays and amazing shots allowing them to only trail by a bit. The first quarter ended with a score of 19-14 for Medicine Hat.
Briercrest came in ready for the second quarter. They were able to make important 3-pointers, defensive plays and offensive pays allowing them to close the gap more. With Briercrest battling hard, the first half of the game ended with a close score of 33-36 for Medicine Hat.
Briercrest brought their good momentum forward into the third making it hard for Medicine Hat to score on them. Briercrest played hard to try and chip away at the score. Medicine Hat maintained their lead and came out of the third quarter with a score of 58-47.
Medicine Hat came into the final quarter strong. Briercrest felt the pressure and called time out at 69-51 for Medicine Hat. Briercrest came back recharged and made back-to-back three-pointers. With Briercrest coming on with full force, Medicine Hat took a timeout with the score at 63-75 for Medicine Hat. Briercrest battled hard but were unable to pull ahead ending the game at 81-68 for Medicine Hat.
Sylvan Lombo was awarded Player of the Game by basketball alumni James Wohlgeschaffen. Lombo had three rebounds, four assists, a team high of one steal and 16 points. Ethan DaSilva had a team high of nine rebounds, while Josh Klassen had a game high of six assists. Lombo, Ben Kornelsen and Theo Block had a team high of one steal.
Medicine Hat dominated in the stats category with 24-23 assists, 2-1 blocks, and 15-3 steals. Briercrest had 44-39 rebounds in the game
