After starting slow, Briercrest wins 5-set thriller over Lethbridge

Briercrest men’s volleyball came into Saturday’s match in hopes of sweeping Lethbridge for the weekend.

Briercrest men’s volleyball started off rough but battled hard and beat Lethbridge in five intense sets 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-14, 15-13).

The teams came in ready, making it a close battle to start off the match. Lethbridge then started to pull ahead causing Briercrest to call a timeout at 17-14. Briercrest battled hard to try and gain the lead and started to close the gap. Lethbridge saw this and called time out at 22-20 for Lethbridge. Briercrest was unable to pull ahead and fell in the first set 25-22.

Both teams started off the set battling back-and-fourth once again. Soon Lethbridge started to pull ahead a bit causing Briercrest to call timeout at 12-10. Lethbridge used their momentum to further their lead but Briercrest didn’t give up. Lethbridge kept their lead allowing them to win 25-19 in the second set.

Briercrest came into the third set looking for a win. Briercrest was able to pull ahead halfway through the set making Lethbridge call timeout at 11-7. Lethbridge closed the gap, which made Briercrest call a timeout at 18-18. Both teams were making key defensive plays resulting in a close set. Briercrest was able to take the lead and hold it till the end giving them their first set win of 25-23.

Briercrest took an early lead in the fourth set causing Lethbridge to call timeout at 6-1. Briercrest held their steady lead giving them some breathing room. Lethbridge called another timeout at 16-10. With their energy high, Briercrest pushed through till the end with a score of 25-14.

The last set started off intense with both teams battling for the win. Lethbridge then called timeout with a score of 10-10 in hopes of pulling ahead. With new energy, Lethbridge pulled ahead causing Briercrest to call timeout at 13-11. Briercrest responded with key defensive plays allowing them to win 15-13.

Brad Harms was awarded Player of the Game by Briercrest College Dean of Students and chaplain, Dan Gabor. Harms had two service aces and eight digs along with a team high of eight kills. Carter Reimer also had a team high of 26 assists and a game high of three blocks. Dalon Hordyk also had a team high of 13 digs along with Calvin Sawatzky having a game high of eight kills.

Briercrest had 9-5 service aces and 9-3 blocks in the match. Lethbridge had 56-32 kills, 49-27 assists and 77-70 digs.
