Women’s Basketball starts off strong but falls to Olds College

The Briercrest women’s basketball team takes on Olds College this weekend for their second home weekend of the season.

Both teams came onto the court with strong defense making it a tight start to the game. With the score at 6-6, Olds called a time out. Olds came back reenergized allowing them to pull ahead from Briercrest. With Briercrest battling hard and two Hannah Klassen 3-pointers, Briercrest was able to close the gap a bit.

The second quarter started off with a close score of 21-26. Briercrest started to fall further behind making them call a timeout at 33-23 in hopes of gaining the lead. They came back onto the court ready giving them 12 rebounds for the quarter. Briercrest ended the second quarter with a score of 34-42.

Briercrest came back strong in the third quarter by making good defensive plays and making lots of baskets. Olds felt the pressure of Briercrest closing the gap resulting in them calling a timeout at 42-47. Olds took advantage of the timeout and gained a bigger lead. Briercrest didn’t give up though and had 14 rebounds in the quarter coming from Amy Wanvig and Sara Karuth with 4 each. The period ended with a score of 63-48 for Olds.

Briercrest came into the final quarter hoping to gain the lead. Olds called a time out with a score of 51-71. Briercrest battled hard throughout the quarter and tried to chip away at the score. Unable to pull ahead, Briercrest fell to Olds with a score of 83-53.

Hannah Klassen was presented Player of the Game by Briercrest Senior Resident Director and women’s basketball chaplain, Terry Wolverton. Klassen had four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a team high of 18 points in the game. Abigael Klassen had a game high of five assists along with Amy Wanvig having a team high of 11 rebounds and two steals.

Olds dominated in the stats category with 19-15 assists, 1-0 blocks and 25-7 steals. Both teams had 47 rebounds.
