Womens Volleyball holds onto first place by defeating MHC 3-0

Briercrest women’s volleyball began their second half of the season in Margaret P. Reimer Memorial Gymnasium with a league standing of first place. They took on Medicine Hat College for their first game of the weekend.

Briercrest women’s volleyball stayed strong throughout the match to beat Medicine Hat in three sets (27-25, 25-12, 25-18)

The second half of the season started off with both teams battling hard making it a close set. Briercrest started making very important, difficult digs halfway through the set allowing them to take a small lead. Medicine Hat called timeout at 19-17 for Briercrest and came back ready. Medicine Hat soon started to take the lead causing Briercrest to call timeout at 22-20. Briercrest responded and took the lead once again causing the set to go into extra points. At 25-24 for Medicine Hat, Briercrest called timeout once again. Briercrest came back determined to win and took the first match with a set score of 27-25.

Medicine Hat came into the second set ready and took a small lead. Briercrest battled back and started to take the lead. Medicine Hat then called timeout at 8-5 in hopes of regaining the lead. Briercrest ramped up their defensive and offensive plays and started to take a large lead. Medicine Hat felt the pressure and called timeout at 15-6 to try and close the gap. Briercrest maintained their large lead till the end of the set giving them their second set win of 25-12.

Briercrest brought their momentum over into the third set by taking the lead once again. Medicine Hat called timeout at 9-6 to try and not fall far behind again. Briercrest continued to add to their lead causing Medicine Hat to call a timeout once again at 17-10. Unable to gain momentum, Medicine Hat fell to Briercrest in the third set. This gave Briercrest their first win of the semester and allowed them to hold onto their first place spot in the league standings.

Brynelle Barrs was awarded player of the game with a game high nine kills to go with eight digs and two service aces. Ashley Zacharias had a game high of 30 assists along with Kathleen Bruce having a game high of two blocks. Sam Zacharias and Mikayla Reinhardt each had a game high of six service aces along with a team high of 11 digs.

Briercrest swept Medicine Hat in the stats category with 36-20 kills, 33-17 assists, 19-5 service aces, 50-48 digs, and 4-1 blocks.
