Women’s volleyball completes the weekend sweep of Olds
After last nights win, Briercrest women’s volleyball took on Olds College again in hopes of being able to sweep them for the weekend and to increase their first place position in the ACAC South standings.
Briercrest swept Olds in three sets to give them both game wins for the weekend (25-19, 25-14, 25-23).
The game got off to a quick start when Olds took an early lead but only by a few points. Briercrest worked hard by making key offensive plays, which allowed them to catch up. The intensity was high in the Hangar with both teams now battling point-for-point. Soon Briercrest was able to pull ahead and put the pressure on Olds. This caused Olds to call timeout at 16-13 for Briercrest. Briercrest only came back stronger from the timeout though and were able to add to their lead, forcing Olds to take another timeout at 19-14. Briercrest kept their steady lead till the end allowing them to claim the first set 25-19.
Briercrest came into the second set with high energy and kept up their momentum. After taking the small lead away from Olds early in the set Briercrest was able to take a steady lead. Both teams worked hard and made long intense rallies between each other. Briercrest often won the rallies allowing them to keep their lead. Â With amazing offensive and defensive plays being made by Briercrest, the lead on Olds kept increasing. Briercrest kept their lead comfortable till the end giving them a final score of 25-14. This gave Briercrest a 2-0 set lead.
Olds came into the third set ready to put up a fight to try and force another set. They took an early lead by making great defensive and offensive plays. Briercrest responded to Olds new momentum by coming back stronger and making Olds battle them point-for-point. With the end drawing near and Olds trailing by two points, Olds took a timeout at 22-20. They were unable to kill Briercrest’s momentum to allow them to pull ahead though. Briercrest claimed the third and final set with a score of 25-23, which gave them the match win.
Kathleen Bruce was awarded Player of the Game by Briercrest women’s Softball coach, Carlie Pagens. Bruce had 11 kills, one assists and two game highs of three blocks and two service aces. Karina Peterson and Sam Zacharias tied Bruce with the game high of two service aces each. Sam Zacharias also had a game high of 12 kills along with Ashley Zacharias having a game high of 37 assists. Mikayla Reinhardt had a game high of 12 digs in the match.
Briercrest dominated Olds in the stats category with 43-28 kills, 40-26 assists, 6-1 service aces and 52-37 digs. Olds had 5-4 blocks in the match.
