Mens Volleyball defeats Olds in three strong sets

With last night’s win in Briercrest men’s volleyball’s pocket; they went into the second game of the weekend looking for the sweep over Olds College.

Briercrest defeated Olds in a quick three sets to give them the game win and sweep for the weekend 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-14).

The game started off with both teams battling point-for-point. Briercrest soon rose above and took the lead. Olds saw this and tried to kill Briercrest’s momentum by calling timeout at 12-7 to settle down and re-strategize. Olds was able to chip away at the score but not pull ahead. This caused them to call timeout again at 19-14. Briercrest kept delivering amazing defensive and offensive plays, which allowed them to claim the first set, 25-15.

Briercrest carried their momentum over to the second set by taking a small lead. They consistently stayed ahead of Olds by a point or two. After a few key offensive plays, Briercrest was able to increase their lead and make themselves a comfortable gap to play with. Olds called timeout at 17-12 but Briercrest just came back stronger and increased their lead. Olds called timeout once again but Briercrest was too strong to be defeated which gave them their second set win of 25-18.

Olds wasn’t ready to give up so they started off the set by making Briercrest battle them point-for-point. After some rallies, Briercrest was able to pull ahead and cause Olds to take a timeout at 12-8. Briercrest continued to add to their lead causing Olds to take another timeout at 19-11 in hopes of being able to force Briercrest into another set. Olds was unable to kill Briercrest’s momentum as Briercrest continued to add to their large lead. Briercrest claimed the third and final set with a sore of 25-14.

Joel Rosewarm was awarded Player of the Game by Caronport Community Church Pastor and Briercrest Faculty, Blayne Banting. Rosewarm had six digs and five kills in the match. Taylor Klassen had two game highs of 10 kills and 10 digs. Carter Reimer had a game high of 25 assists along with Mitch Erikson having a game high of three service aces. Erickson and Calvin Sawatzky each had a game high of two blocks in the match.

Briercrest swept Olds in the stats category with 33-23 kills, 27-22 assists, 7-1 service aces, 39-28 digs, 5-0 blocks.
