Graduating captain Carter Reimer carries team to a four set win

Briercrest men’s volleyball came into their final Friday night home game of the season ready to take on Ambrose University. Graduating athlete and team captain, Carter Reimer was honoured and recognized tonight after the game.

Briercrest started off slow but battled hard through last three sets giving them a four set match win (19-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-15).

Ambrose came into the game with high energy, which led to them taking a large early lead. Briercrest took an early timeout at 7-2 to try and put a stop to Ambrose’s rally. Ambrose continued to keep a steady lead causing Briercrest to take another timeout at 16-11. Briercrest came back with new found momentum and started to close the gap on Ambrose. Ambrose was able to keep the lead though giving them the set win of 25-19.

Briercrest came into the second set with new found momentum. With key defensive and offensive plays being made by Briercrest they were able to take the lead on Ambrose. Briercrest had a comfortable 13-point lead on Ambrose with a score of 20-7. Ambrose then kicked it up a notch and started to close the gap a bit. Briercrest was able to keep their large lead though and won their first set with a score of 25-16.

Briercrest came into the third set by taking the lead early. Ambrose called timeout at 9-4, which gave them just the break they needed. This led to Ambrose quickly taking the lead causing Briercrest to call timeout also at 9-14. Briercrest then started to close the gap and soon regained the lead. Ambrose felt the pressure and called timeout at 22-23. Briercrest continued to execute key plays allowing them to keep their small lead leading to their second set win with a score of 25-23.

Briercrest carried their momentum over to the fourth set and took an early lead. Ambrose quickly called timeout to try and kill Briercrest’s momentum and force a fifth set. Briercrest continued to add to their lead though causing Ambrose to take another timeout. They stayed strong till the end and won the set with a score of 25-15 also giving them the match win.

After the match head coach Nigel Mullan made a heart touching speech to Carter Reimer to commemorate and congratulate him on his six well served years playing on the Briercrest men’s volleyball team.

Carter Reimer was awarded Player of the Game by his parents. Reimer had one service ace, five kills and two game highs of 15 digs and 28 assists. Taylor Klassen had a team high of 12 kills and a game high of five service aces. Mitch Erikson had a game high two blocks in the match.

Briercrest swept Ambrose in the stats categories with 40-34 kills, 32-30 assists, 12-6 service aces, 76-65 digs and 6-4 blocks.
