Briercrest Hockey comeback falls short in energetic Home Opener

Posted: September 30, 2016

The Briercrest Hockey team had an exciting Alumni Home Opener against SAIT Friday, Sept. 30 coming from behind twice in the game, but ultimately falling short 3-2.

After introducing the team and a ceremonial faceoff presented by player and coaching alumni Nathan Wiebe, the game began at a high pace with both teams getting chances early and both goalies playing strong. SAIT opened the scoring half way into the first (Michael Lyle from Dave Nippard), but Briercrest quickly responded with a power play goal by Josh Anderson which was assisted by Alex Bechtold to end the first period 1-1.

SAIT responded early into the second period and then again halfway through the period to give them a 3-1 lead (goals by Pat Martens assisted by Geoff Crisfield and Dean Allison, and again by Michael Lyle assisted by Dave Nippard and Zach Wittenberg), but Briercrest responded at the 14:57 with another goal and assist by Josh Anderson and Alex Bechtold.

The end of the second period and the third period both teams had strong pressure, but Briercrest’s Christian Mueller (36 saves on 39 shots) and SAIT’s Bolton Pouliot (17 saves on 19 shots) held down the fort and didn’t allow another goal.

SAIT took the game 3-2 and Players of the Game were Briercrest’s Josh Anderson and SAIT’s Michael Lyle who each had two goals in the game. SAIT was 0-5 on the powerplay while Briercrest was 1-5.
