Briercrest Hockey rally falls short after early deficit against SAIT

Posted: October 1, 2016

The Briercrest Hockey team had another exciting game against SAIT Saturday, Oct. 1.

After falling behind early 3-0 against SAIT in Briercrest rookie goaltender Daniel Dekoning’s first taste of regular season hockey at the Barkman Arena, the team clamped down and controlled more of the play. The line of Jacob Baribeau, Jordan Harder and Thomas Freeman came alive and produced two quick goals for Briercrest to cut the lead to 3-2.

The first goal was Jordan Harder’s first in a Briercrest jersey and was assisted by Briercrest captain Jacob Baribeau. Less than two minutes later assistant captain Micah Abbott scored on the powerplay with an assist by Jordan Harder.

SAIT got into penalty trouble in the middle of the second period and the Briercrest powerplay made them pay. Rookie defenseman Bryton Beattie got his first goal in his Briercrest career on a powerplay, assisted by Alex Bechtold. Successive penalties gave Briercrest more than three minutes of 5-on-3 powerplay, but were unable to take the lead.

The third period saw both teams with chances, but both goalies played strong with Briercrest’s Daniel Dekoning and SAIT’s Bolton Pouliot both making strong saves to keep the score tied until SAIT Player of the Game Pat Martens broke the tie with less than five minutes left in the game. Hunter Mills assisted on that power play goal and also scored an empty net goal to ice the game 5-3 for SAIT

Daniel Dekoning was Briercrest Player of the Game (45 saves on 49 shots) and SAIT’s Bolton Pouliot saved 16 of 19.

SAIT was 2-5 on the powerplay while Briercrest was 1-8.
