Briercrest puts fire on the ice against MacEwan Griffins

Posted: October 14, 2016

Briercrest had an extremely strong first period as Josh Anderson scored the first goal from Bryton Beattie’s assisted tip in the first five minutes. Josh Peters scored soon after with Jacob Baribeau and Ben Feere with the assists, leading Briercrest 2-0 against the MacEwan Griffins, creating tension for the Griffins to comeback hard. Alex Bechtold scored the third goal at 16:37 from the deflection in the slot on the left side from the beautiful pass to the middle from Anderson. In an attempt to cool down the fire that Briercrest was bringing, shortly after the third goal, the Griffins’ Chris Wray was pulled from goal and Marc-Olivier Daigle took over the net for MacEwan.

The Griffins then started off the second period with a goal right off the bat from Cam Gotaas, putting it away on the blocker side as a result from some pressure in the corner leading to the puck ending up in front of the net. After a rush to the net, they continued their comeback with captain Ryan Benn picking the puck up in the slot and putting it in the back of the net.

Early in the 3rd period, the Griffins capitalized on a sloppy play in front of the net, Cam Gotaas scoring and tying the game, three all, putting everyone in the stands on the edge of their seats. A couple minutes later, Briercrest had a chance to get back on top after Blake Grainger took a penalty. Unfortunately, 3 seconds into the power play, Alex Bechtold took a penalty as well – cutting the power play short. With 45.8 seconds remaining, Jordan Harder scored the game winning goal to bring back the strength that Briercrest showed at the beginning of the game.

Briercrest began with a stellar start with three quick goals, a rocky second period, ending off with a comeback in the last minute to give the fans what they wanted. Briercrest demonstrated incredible discipline only having four penalty minutes overall, only starting halfway through the game with a very clean first half. Player of the Game for Briercrest went to Jordan Harder for the game winning goal and the MacEwan Griffins’ Cam Gotaas for 2 goals and 1 assist.
