The Briercrest junior varsity volleyball teams hosted a PAC volleyball tournament for the first time in over 20 years this weekend.

Briercrest women hosted Moose Jaw Polytechnic on the feature court Friday evening, defeating Moose Jaw 2-0 (28-26, 25-13). The women continued their strong play with the 9:00 am game on Saturday, Oct. 15 defeating Prince Albert 2-0 (25-16, 25-21). Briercrest continued their winning ways by defeating Prairie 2-0 (26-24, 25-19) and Great Plains 2-0 (25-9, 25-16) and finishing the tournament with a 4-0 record.

Head coach Richelle Vigeant was very pleased with her team’s growth.

“This weekend was our first time playing as a full team, and on our home court--we went 4-0 over the weekend, which was a result of a true team effort,” Vigeant explained. “Each of our 12 players contributed on the court again this weekend, some of whom weren't at our last tournament and were playing in a league games for the first time. It was a significant sign of improvement that we were able to pull together as a team for some close matches and execute some tactical and technical aspects that we have been working on in practice. Our serving was extremely effective over the course of the weekend, which gave us an early lead in some important matches. Furthermore, our players adapted well to position and lineup changes over the weekend, and showed great versatility in many of our games. We look forward to continuing to build off of our success this past weekend and prepare for our next tournament in Moose Jaw!”

The Briercrest men started their weekend strong  as well in the second game on the North court, defeating Moose Jaw 2-0 (25-23, 25-13). The Briercrest men began their Saturday against Prince Albert and lost a hard fought game 2-0 (25-22, 25-22). They followed that up with a convincing 2-0 (25-19, 25-21) victory over Prairie and a tight 2-1 victory (23-25, 28-26, 15-10) over Great Plains.

Briercrest JV head coach Carter Reimer was pleased with his team’s growth this weekend.

“This weekend our team went 3-1 which was a large improvement from our previous tournament,” Reimer said. “I thought that the guys have done well over last couple weeks about being intentional in their reps and striving to become better. It showed this weekend through our defense play, as we were able to extend rallies and frustrate our opponents. There was also a difference in our confidence this week, because we have had one tournament done already we were not as nervous going into the games this weekend, which meant we were able to execute at a high level.”
